Urbana University announces football recruiting class

From Sports.Urbana.edu:

Despite a massive snow and ice storm that enveloped the area, the Urbana University football program enjoyed another successful National Signing Day on Wednesday. The Blue Knight Football Staff wants to say thank you to everyone who made the 2011 signing day a success. Without the help of President Dr. Stephen Jones, Athletic Director Doug Young, Mary Anne Barr and her entire admissions staff, Amy Barnhart and Robin Makarius and the entire Financial Aid Staff, this day would not be possible. The hard work of everyone on campus who assisted us with this recruiting class is deeply appreciated. The entire coaching staff, each current and future student-athlete, and their families are extremely grateful.

The team would like to announce the signing of the National Letter of Intent of 21 new players to the Urbana University Blue Knight Football Family. At this time, the team would also like to recognize the arrival of 4 new Blue Knights who joined the program for the spring semester. Each is an integral component to Head Coach Dave Taynor’s third recruiting class at Urbana University.

New OHSAA formula wouldn’t apply to all

From the Columbus Dispatch:

Each year, Marion-Franklin wrestling coach Derek Oney welcomes a class of raw athletes who want to give the sport a try. Most have no clue what they are getting into.

There are no middle-school programs in the City League, so their first exposure to wrestling comes the first day of practice. Three weeks later, they take the mat for the first time.

It’s not a script for success, but Marion-Franklin has done the best it can. It is consistently one of the best teams in the City League. On a district or state level, it is hard for the Red Devils or other City teams to compete with athletes from suburban or private schools who have been wrestling for nearly a decade.

This discrepancy might soon be fixed. Even though wrestling was not one of the eight sports included in a proposal by the Ohio High School Athletic Association to equalize competition, it would be covered when the OHSAA holds a state dual tournament in 2013, spokesman Tim Stried said. The formula will not apply to the individual tournament, which the OHSAA will still run.

Creating a more-level field could benefit City teams, such as Marion-Franklin, that might drop a division based on a socioeconomic factor in the proposal.

Cedarville legend returns to Jackets basketball

ddn0112arch.JPG

From Cedars, Cedarville University’s student newspaper:

While she’s coaching, Kari Flunker can hardly sit. She prefers to crouch on the floor in front of her seat, yelling and clapping, as if waiting for a chance to sneak onto the court and play again.

And did she ever know how to do that. In the Cedarville women’s basketball career record books, there are two notable names: Brittany Smart — the all-time NAIA Division II leading scorer — and Kari Flunker.

Second in total points (2,275), first in assists (644), second in steals (331), tied for first in games played (142), first in all three-point shooting categories. She was a two-time All American, and two-time American Mideast Conference Player of the Year before graduating in 2005.

When you talk to anyone who knows Flunker — now a first-year assistant coach at Cedarville — each of them start stringing together the same descriptive words: Passionate. Energetic. Hard-working. Competitive. Especially that last one.

Like the time her freshman year she spent the night after a painful loss shooting three after three with her dad, still wearing her untucked jersey. Head coach Kirk Martin said her commitment to Cedarville basketball was obvious, even that early. “I knew we had a keeper,” he says.

Already enrolled, DePriest signs with Alabama

From TideSports.com:

Linebackers Vinnie Sunseri and Trey DePriest signed papers to attend The University of Alabama at Northridge High Wednesday, but only one of them actually played there.

Sunseri, the son of UA assistant coach Sal Sunseri, has attended Northridge since the family moved to UA two seasons ago. DePriest, however, is an Ohio native who, like his close friend Sunseri, enrolled at UA early.

For one day Northridge served as a surrogate home for DePriest. Did he miss his old friends at Springville, Ohio?

Of course.

“That would be nice, but Mrs. Sunseri and coach Sal and all the family here, they’ve opened up to me and I appreciate her being my stand-in mom for today,” DePriest said.
