Lights out ‘a blessing in disguise’ for KR

SOUTH CHARLESTON — The Southeastern High School boys basketball team was on fire to start their game against Kenton Ridge on Thursday, until someone turned the lights out — literally.

The Trojans led by as many as 10 in the second quarter, but with 4:45 remaining in the second quarter, a power outage in South Charleston delayed the contest for 20 minutes.

When the lights finally came back on, the Trojans lost their shooting touch, scoring just 12 points the rest of the way.

“The lights out was a blessing in disguise,” KR coach Kris Spriggs said. “They were on fire.”

The Cougars capitalized, earning a 50-35 victory over Southeastern.

It was the third straight season the Cougars have beaten the Trojans. KR improved to 5-4 overall. They’ve won four of their last five games since starting 1-3. Their lone loss in that stretch was a 58-57 loss at Tippecanoe.

Christian Thompson had a season-high 18 points for the Cougars. Josh Black had 14 points for SE.

The Trojans face-guarded KR senior Luke Mamer, who was held to a season-low five points, but the rest of the Cougars picked up the slack.

“If a team is going to take something away, they’ve got to give something up,” said Spriggs. “Their focus was on Luke. The other guys stepped up and did a good job.”

With the last two days off school, both teams were rusty. Neither team had practiced since Monday.

The Cougars will travel to Tecumseh tomorrow with virtually no preparation. They haven’t played on back-to-back nights all season.

“It’s uncharted water for us,” Spriggs said.
