How Shawnee’s comeback went down

Last night, Tuesday, Dec. 22, the Shawnee High School boys basketball team was able to overcome an 18-point deficit in the first half to win a crucial Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division game against Tippecanoe.

The Braves, playing in their home opener, entered the fourth quarter down 12 points. Once they got the crowd fired up, they fed off that momentum and started to make big plays.

Here’s how the comeback went down:

A 10-2 run early in the quarter was key in the comeback. Josh Hayes’ 3-point play with 6:15 remaining pulled Shawnee to within seven at 48-41.

Then, Steve Sarven and Connor McDonough each hit two free throws, and a 3-pointer by P.J. Howell pulled the Braves to within two at 50-48.

Two more free throws by Michael Hogan pulled the Braves to within one point at 51-50.

A bucket by Tippecanoe’s Alex Davis gave the Red Devils a 3-point lead at 53-30, but back-to-back layups by McDonough and Howell, off an under the bucket inbounds play, gave the Braves a lead they’d never relinquish.

Hayes and Howell combined for six free throws down the stretch to seal the win in the waning moments.

Even though it’s early in the season, the Braves didn’t want to fall two games back in the tough league race. They’re currently tied for first with Tippecanoe, Kenton Ridge and Tecumseh, all at 3-1. KR’s lone loss came at Bellefontaine (2-2).

“We came in at halftime, scratching our heads wondering what we’re going to do,” said Shawnee coach Chris McGuire said. “We had to get some energy going. Our seniors stepped up and did a great job. We had a lot of contributors.”

People who were at this game named Connor McDonough as the person who fired the team up. If so, go Connor. You don’t have to score double D’s to help win a game!!!
