Hoskins officially named Springfield head basketball coach

Darnell Hoskins, 34, was offically named the new head boys basketball coach at Springfield High School on Thursday at the city school board meeting.

Hoskins comes from a basketball family. His cousin Brandie Hoskins, a fellow Chaminade-Julienne graduate, starred at Ohio State from 2003-07 and now plays in Europe.

Hoskins credits his dad Chuck, who still lives in Dayton, for much of his success.

“My dad was the first one to start me in any sport,” Darnell said. “The one thing that he taught me was once I started something, I was going to finish it. Growing up as a youth, I played everything: baseball, football, basketball, track. This is probably gut-wrenching for my dad to hear, but I was probably more natural as a baseball player, but baseball was just so boring. I was a natural at it, and he knew it.

“Basketball was always something that constantly challenged me to get better every day. I gravitated toward it because of that reason. I was chasing the challenge and really not the reward.

“That was something he saw in me early. He put all the resources he had, both financially and otherwise, to see that it would happen for me. He stayed behind me and steered my career to the right high school and helped me make the decision to choose the right college. I can’t thank him enough for just being that strong positive backbone that I needed.”
