SPRINGFIELD — Chaminade-Julienne assistant boys basketball coach Darnell Hoskins will be recommended to the school board as the new head boys basketball coach at Springfield High School on Thursday, Sept. 24, according to the personnel agenda for Thursday’s school board meeting.

“I’m very excited,” said Hoskins, 34. “It’s a heck of an opportunity. Springfield has a rich history and tradition. It’s had some great teams in the past.”

Hoskins is a 1993 graduate of CJ. He is a member of the school’s athletic hall of fame. He has been an assistant coach to CJ’s Joe Staley since 2004. Prior to that, he played eight years of professional basketball in Europe and Australia.

Hoskins played college basketball at the University of Wisconsin until the middle of his junior year when he transferred to the University of Dayton. He had to sit out a year and played the last half of his senior year, the 1996-97 season, with the Flyers, averaging 14.1 points per game.

Hoskins said he likes an up-tempo style of play.

“I like the quote one of my college coaches had,” Hoskins said. “We will run in such a way as to win. Whatever type of talent we have, we’ll make adjustments to best suit what we have. But if I have my druthers, I like to get up and down the floor. I like to be up in your face man to man. It’s going to be a fast-paced type game, and from what I’m hearing, Springfield has tremendous athletes.”

Hoskins said he was interviewed Sept. 16 and was told he would be hired on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

He said he won’t use the late start he’s getting as an excuse.

“I’m going to have the same amount of time once practice starts as every other coach in the state of Ohio,” Hoskins said. “I just want to get it done. Get the kids in shape. Start a weight room program, open gyms. Take a look at who can do what.”

Bill Slagle resigned as Springfield coach July 6.

I am sure Coach Hoskins will do agreat job at Springfield. I know he will help develope the players into outstanding young men just as Coach Staley did for him.
