Bass tops in MileSplit D-I long jump rankings

sns042208spShawneeTrack17.JPG

According to oh.milesplit.us, Springfield’s Josh Bass’ long jump distance of 23 feet, 1.25 inches, is tops in Ohio in Division 1, and second in the state behind Delta senior Korbin Smith (23-5).

Thanks to Springfield-based FinishTiming.com’s affiliation with the web site, every meet they time around the area is getting put into those rankings.

Several other athletes are high in the rankings. Urbana’s Will Barr and West Liberty-Salem’s Nate Bratka have the second and third best throws, respectively. Springfield’s Shanay Portis also has the fifth best time in the state in the 100 (12.15).

Wittenberg football team to walk in Relay for Life

sns090708spwittfb1.JPG

From Wittenberg SID Ryan Maurer:

For one night at least, Wittenberg’s hard-driving football coaching staff is encouraging the players in the program to stay up late and enjoy the party.

It’s all for a good cause, and the usual trappings of college night life will largely be absent. The Tiger players are competing against one another to raise money for cancer research through the American Cancer Society’s annual Wittenberg Relay for Life event Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26.

Ham applies at Lakota West

sns113007spSouthBBK9.JPG

It looks like Larry Ham is hoping to get back in the coaching business.

Ham, a former South and Trotwood-Madison High School boys basketball coach, has applied for the vacant job opening at Lakota West. He’s one of 21 candidates which include high school and college head coaches.

Ham spent 14 seasons with the Wildcats, compiling a 235-92 mark, the second-most wins of any boys basketball coach at South or the old Springfield High School.

WEST CHESTER TWP. — The Lakota West High boys basketball opening attracted 21 applicants.

Now, the next step for West Athletic Director Gerry Weisgerber is to narrow down who he wants to interview for the position, which was open for three weeks.

Weisgerber said he will interview up to six candidates beginning Tuesday, April 21.

“We want somebody who is one, going to be strong with Xs and Os,” Weisgerber said. “A winning experience with what they’ve done, even as an assistant coming from winning programs. We want somebody who can teach the game as well as coach it — discipline on and off the court, motivating players and being able to get players to the next level as well.”

Scott Mueller, who coached the Firebirds under the interim tag this past season, will get one of the interviews.

“It’s a good list,” Weisgerber said. “A lot of good candidates. A lot of good young ones and experienced guys with good credentials. We’ll definitely get a good coach out of this.”

Adjustments help KR in win over Urbana

sns041709spUrbanaBB5.JPG

Kenton Ridge baseball coach Aaron Shaffer knew the Cougars’ game against Urbana on Thursday, April 17 would be low-scoring.

“We knew they’d probably throw the lefty (Michael Dunfee),” Shaffer said. “We know he can throw. He had a great ERA. We knew we were going to have to manufacture runs, move runners and scratch off runs anyway we could. He went nine-up, nine-down against us the first three innings, so we got the guys over here and talked about making adjustments.”

It was those adjustments that helped KR put runs on the board to bring home a 5-2 victory.

Brandon Hube’s two-run single in the fourth, and Michael Bennett’s two-run double and RBI sacrifice fly in the seventh proved to be all the offense the Cougars needed.

“In the fourth and fifth inning, we made him throw a lot of pitches, got some runners off base and got him off his rhythm a little bit and get some big two-out hits,” Shaffer said.

Kevin Bowdle said once Dunfee started missing on some pitches early in the count, that’s when the Cougars struck.

“He was really in command and he got behind on some hitters and that’s when they started to hit him,” Bowdle said. “He still had a great outing. They’re a good-hitting ball club and I think that’s the lowest total of runs they’ve scored all year. He pitched well enough to win, we just needed to score some more runs for him.”

Meanwhile, KR’s Tom Piatt allowed just three hits in six innings of work, striking out six. Both runs scored on him were unearned.

“Great job, a great job,” Shaffer said. “As a senior, he’s one of those guys who wants the ball. You give it to him and he’s goign to be around the plate and challenge hitters. He’s got confidence in his defense and he’s going to go right at guys and that’s what he did.”

KR’s Ethan Sharpin picked up the save. In three innings pitched, Sharpin has struck an impressive eight of the 10 batters he’s faced.

“He came in and shut door,” Shaffer said.

The Cougars (9-1, 3-0 CBC Kenton Trail) face Shawnee today and travel to Eaton for a doubleheader tomorrow. They also face a big Kenton Trail Division matchup with Tippecanoe next week.

“It’ll be a good challenge for us, the end of this week and next week,” Shaffer said. “I like the way we’re playing right now. We’re playing well, we just have to keep it up.”

The Hillclimbers (7-3, 2-1 CBC) play Greenon today.

“It’s very important for us in our league race and our division,” Bowdle said.

Despite the loss, Bowdle is still optimistic about his Hillclimbers’ squad.

“KR came out and had some timely hits,” Bowdle said. “I thought we played well and even though we lost, I think we’re a pretty good team and we can play with anybody.”

Softball pitcher strikes out 44, loses in 20th inning

From the Daily Record in Wooster:

WOOSTER — Wooster pitching ace Kasie Kelly broke the state record.

Then, Lisa Tittle broke the heart of Kelly and her fellow Generals.

Kelly set the Ohio High School Athletic Association record for single-game strikeouts with 44, but Lexington’s Tittle led off the bottom of the 20th inning with a home run to lift the Lady Lex past the Generals 1-0. The game was started at Lexington Wednesday, suspended due to darkness, then completed at Wooster Thursday despite objection from Lexington coach Mike Hamman.

“Either the pitcher didn’t throw it where she was supposed to or the coach called the wrong pitch,” said Wooster coach Dave Kelly, who is also Kasie’s father, of the game’s final pitch. “I’ll share the blame … I better because I have to go home and sit at the dinner table with her.”

Florida high school pitcher throws 3 straight no-hitters

From TampaBay.com:

Mitchell left-hander Patrick Schuster has pulled off the unthinkable — in triplicate.

A 6-foot-2 University of Florida signee, Schuster tossed his third consecutive no-hitter Monday night, striking out 16 Clearwater Central Catholic batters in a 2-0 home triumph.

The feat ties a 24-year-old state record held by Gonzalez Tate’s Ben Webb, according to longtime Orlando Sentinel prep sports reporter and state records archivist Buddy Collings.

Stevens will be recommended as Northwestern’s football coach

sns080808BrianStevens.JPG

Brian Stevens will be recommended to the Northwestern board of education as the high school’s new head football coach. The board meets on Thursday, April 16.

Stevens was offered the job on Monday, district superintendent Tony Orr said.

Stevens, 30, was an assistant coach at Greenon the previous five seasons. He was an assistant at Northwestern for one year, and was an assistant at Northwestern in 2003.

Northwestern went 6-4 in 2006, but dipped to 1-9 this season.

“I wouldn’t go to Northwestern if I didn’t think there was a chance to win,” Stevens said. “I’m going there to build a program and get the program winning.”

On this date in area sports history…

On this date in area sports history, the News-Sun published a story on South grad Chris Wallace and North grad C.J. McDavid, who were gearing up for their first season with the Carolina Rhinos of the af2.

Nine years later, Wallace is still playing and tossed the most touchdown passes in Arena Football history.

Published in the April 7, 2000 edition of the News-Sun:

By Ron Ware, News-Sun Sports Writer

Chris Wallace has played on national television, in jam-packed stadiums and against some of the biggest names in college football. And on every level, he’s been a winner, leaving a string of records as his legacy.

The former South and University of Toledo quarterback admits it’s a “humbling experience” to be making $200 a game playing in a minor league of a minor league while hoping against hope that someone _ anyone _ will take notice and invite him to an NFL camp.

But Wallace and longtime friend C.J. McDavid, the former North standout who played at Miami University and Southern Illinois, are determined to give it their best shot.

Both are expected to play key roles for the Carolina Rhinos of arenafootball2, an offshoot of Arena Football that launches its first season with 15 franchises in secondary markets, primarily in the Southeast. The Rhinos, based in Greenville, S.C. (and named for one of their owners’ long-distance company), open Saturday night in Tulsa, with Wallace as the starting quarterback and McDavid tabbed to start at linebacker or cornerback once he recovers from a hamstring pull.

To Carolina Coach Earnest Wilson, Wallace, 24, and McDavid, 25, are the exact kind of players who can thrive in the new league _ ones with untapped potential who have been largely overlooked but possess the skills and desire to make it to a higher level … whether that’s Arena ball, the CFL or even the NFL, as Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner managed after playing indoor football.

“C.J.’s the real deal, like I said before,” said Wilson, who was a big booster of the 6-foot-3, 235-pounder when he coached him last season with the Dayton Skyhawks of the rival Indoor Football League. “We just gotta get him some practice time.

“And Chris is the real deal, too. He came in and just took over the quarterback spot.”

Wallace, who started two seasons at Toledo, winding up as the Rockets’ fourth-leading career passer, spent last fall helping to coach at South while working out regularly at Ohio State with the likes of former high school teammate Dee Miller and NFL holdout Joey Galloway.

Although he’s gotten looks from a few NFL and CFL scouts, concerns about his size (6-1, 214), speed and footwork have prevented him from even getting to a camp. But Wallace has been told he’s too short and too slow all his life … and he’s not about to start listening now.

“I let people talk and make any assumption that they want to make,” he said, “but I’m going to go on and keep playing and keep playing hard. And I know one day I’m going to be playing on Sundays.”

Wallace said he was close to signing with a German team that offered him a hefty salary as well as a car and an apartment. But he ultimately decided that wasn’t the best road if he ever hopes to make it to the NFL.

“I’m willing to take a little less now and develop more, and maybe get a little more in the long run,” he said.

“It’s a humbling experience right now that I’m going through. (But) it’s an opportunity that I’m taking. There’s only one way to go, and that’s up from here.”

Wilson had heard the story of how Wallace overcame a severe foot deformity as a youth, but he said it’s absurd to think the former South standout lacks the quickness or footwork to succeed in pro football.

“That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard,” said Wilson, who has coached at five colleges and interned with two NFL teams. “He came in here and not having been in a camp ran a 4.7 (in the 40-yard dash). And most quarterbacks with regular feet can’t run a 4.7. I don’t think his potential in any way has been realized.”

Like Wallace, McDavid sees af2 as his ticket to the CFL or NFL. Wilson was certain he would wind up in an NFL camp after earning all-league honors last year with the Skyhawks, but when the phone didn’t ring, McDavid agreed to follow his coach to Carolina to give it one more shot.

“Everywhere I’ve played, I’ve always been an impact player,” McDavid said. “It’s kind of like you’re just going to keep going at it and eventually somebody’ll see you. I figure if I continue to play good ball, it’ll happen. I think it’ll happen after this year.”

That’s the lure for everyone in af2, which utilizes the same rules, including eight-on-eight play and a 50- by 28-foot enclosed field, as Arena Football. The Rhinos play in a new arena, the BI-LO Center, that features state-of-the-art lockerrooms and weight training facilities, and have sold 3,300 season tickets.

McDavid and Wallace know they’ve never worked so hard for $200.

“It’s brutal,” Wallace said of the so-called 50-Foot Indoor War. “I mean, football’s brutal. You’re going to get hit. You got shoulder pads and a helmet and equipment, but you’re going to get hit.”

He and McDavid are just hoping to be a hit with NFL scouts.

“Last year (with Dayton), we were pretty successful, going to the playoffs the first time,” McDavid said. “I was one of the leaders and the only player on the team to make all-conference. I just figure, sooner or later, somebody’s gotta notice.”

On this date in area sports history…

On this date 12 years ago, April 6, 1997, the News-Sun published its annual softball preview, which focused on South High School, who were gunning for a record fifth straight Western Ohio League title.

Published in the April 6, 1997 edition of the News-Sun:

SOUTH’S DRIVE IS FOR HISTORY, FIFTH STRAIGHT WOL TITLE

By Greg Billing, News-Sun Sports Writer

South’s motto for the 1997 prep softball season reflects its desire to make history in the Western Ohio League. After winning their fourth straight WOL crown last season, South didn’t waste any time thinking about its “Drive For Five.”

According to South Coach Greg Newland, no WOL team has won five straight league titles. Kettering Fairmont came closest, capturing four straight in the early 1980s.

For the South seniors, who have compiled a 77-5 varsity record, the drive must seem like a Sunday afternoon jaunt in the country in a Mack truck. No one is getting in their way.

“These girls are used to winning and they take losing very hard,” said Newland, who is 253-85 in 17 seasons.

Fortunately for the Wildcats, they haven’t had to deal with that very often. On the flip side, however, a few of their losses have come deep into the Division I tournament, which makes losing even tougher.

South fell to Fairfield, 1-0, in the regional final last season and made the state tournament two years ago. The Wildcats are also swinging for their third straight district title.

With Mindy Dasher on the mound and Wendy Olinger at first — both are All-Ohio seniors — the Wildcats, 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the WOL, think they have a good shot at going deep in the tournament. Oh, and another conference crown.

Dasher is off to her typical start this season with a 3-0 record and 34 strikeouts. She tossed a perfect game and struck out 12 in the Wildcats WOL opener against Xenia. Overall, Dasher is 61-3 with 614 strikeouts.

Olinger, who hit .440 last year, is also off to a solid start with a couple multi-hit games.

As if they need it, sophomore catcher Erin Jankovich — another Division I prospect — has a pair of three RBI games thus far.

While the pitchers are finding the plate and the hitters are finding holes — a sure sign of spring at South — one thing is missing this season.

“Last year the expectations were a little unfair. After going to the final four, the girls had to live with the expectations of repeating,” Newland said. “Since we didn’t go last year, the pressure is not as high. We certainly set our goals lofty, but the pressure this year is not at the same level. It was tremendous pressure last year.”

In the Central Buckeye Conference, defending champion Bellefontaine is the team to beat but a few schools think they are up to the task. Coaches mentioned Kenton Ridge and Tecumseh as contenders to dethrone the Chieftains. Northwestern, which finished second last season, is also a challenger with seven upperclassmen returning.

Triad is the favorite among West Central Ohio Conference coaches to win the league title. Indian Lake should make it tough for the Cardinals, as should Ridgemont and Fairbanks.

Catholic Central and Graham — as well as the rest of the league - will most likely be chasing Sidney Lehman in the Southwestern Rivers Conference. The Cavs return a potent lineup. Miami East and Tipp City should also contend for the title.

In the Kenton Trace Conference, East Clinton goes for its third straight title. Greeneview has a shot of halting the streak and Southeastern is also optimistic.

10 things to watch for in girls track this season

Despite the rain and cold weather outside, it’s still track season.

Here are 10 things to watch out for in girls track and this season:

1) The last athlete in South High School history to compete in the state tournament — Cassandra Lloyd — won the Division I hurdles. Now, with a combined Springfield High School, the next state champion will likely be the first female state champion in school history. Wildcats senior Shanay Portis — who qualified for the state meet in three events last season — will look to be the first to grab a state title.

2) After a successful cross country season, Tecumseh senior Alison Steinbrunner will look to tear up the track. She finished seventh in the D-I 3,200 last spring and will look to improve on her time — and bring Tecumseh a CBC Kenton Trail Division title.

3) Northwestern senior Kasey Hosier will look to make her sixth appearance at a state championship (four in cross country and one in track) this spring. She finished ninth in the D-II 3,200 last spring.

4) Can Tecumseh defend its Clark County title? The Arrows won for the first time ever last spring and will look to make it two in a row, but will face stiff competition from a combined Springfield squad.

5) Can Greeneview make it a four-peat in the OHC? The Rams have dominated the league over the last three years, but with low numbers — they have just 11 athletes — and a few resurgent programs — Northeastern and West Liberty-Salem — it will be a challenge to maintain their success.

6) One of the biggest surprises in girls track was Shawnee pole vaulter Rachel Steiner. She finished 14th at the D-II state meet last season with a jump of 9 feet, 6 inches. She’ll look to improve on her success this season.

7) Graham senior Chelsie Stanley finished fifth at the regionals in the high jump last season with a leap of 5-1, missing out on the state meet by just one inch. She’ll have her mind set on making the state meet this spring.

8) In Dave Carroll’s last season as coach, the Urbana Hillclimbers will be doing whatever it takes to win the CBC Mad River Division title. With young talent like sophomore sprinter Katie Raterman and freshman hurdler Kaley Moss, Urbana will be tough this season.

9) Cedarville junior Katie Bunker placed third in the D-III 800 last spring in her second appearance in Columbus. She’ll look to break into the top-2 this season.

10) Who will be the top thrower in the area? With the graduation of Cedarville’s Katie Gerhardt and Urbana’s Amy Evans, the throwing events will be wide-open throughout the area.

10 things to watch for in boys track this season

Track season is already underway, but there are still several weeks before the tournaments begin and athletes get in top form.

Here’s 10 things to watch out for in boys track this season:

1) Springfield is back to one team. They’ve got more kids than they’ve had in the last five years with North and South, and a lot of talent. They’ll look to have a big season as team, especially in big meets around the area. They host their first track meet at Evans Stadium tonight.

2) Nate Bratka, an Air Force Academy signeed, will look to defend his title in the D-III discus. He’ll also look to win the OHC meet — something he’s never done.

3) Another top thrower, Urbana’s Will Barr, will look to make his mark at the state level. He’s made multiple state appearances, but has yet to conquer in Columbus.

4) After an tough year in cross country, Shawnee’s Dustin Hines will look to rebound on the track. He qualified for the state meet in the D-II 1,600 last season, and will look for a top-8 finish this spring.

5) Greenon’s Gareth Graver exploded last track season by qualifying for the D-II 3,200 at the state meet, and carried the momentum into cross country season.

6) Northeastern’s Aaron Hartzell placed sixth at the state meet last season — with a broken wrist. He’s already cleared 6-6 this season, and will look to leap into the top-5 in D-II.

7) Shawnee has won the Clark County Meet four years in a row. They’ll look to make it five in a row, but should get a strong challenge from Springfield and Northeastern.

8) Northeastern won the Ohio Heritage Conference Meet last season for the first time in league history. They hadn’t won a league meet since 1966. They’ll look to repeat, but will face stiff competition from West Liberty-Salem, Greeneview and Mechanicsburg.

9) The Yellow Springs 3,200 relay team finished fourth last season in D-III — and return three legs, including Brock and Jake GunderKline and Alexis Onfroy. They’ll hope to build on that success this season.

10) The Springfield-area seemingly has one great hurdler every season, and this year is no different. Watch out for Mechanicsburg’s Keith Hurst and Shawnee’s Brandon Cook to both make waves in the hurdling events this season.

We’ll have 10 things to watch for in girls track on Saturday.

Wallace, Gaines teammates in AF2

image_8539389.jpg

From Thursday’s News-Sun:

Chris Wallace likes having Jerrid Gaines as a teammate — up to a certain point. Quarterbacks and defensive backs, after all, are always going to have their differences, even if they are both former South High School Wildcats. “He had a tip-ball pick in camp,” Wallace said. “He can’t have more than one.”

Springfield baseball team off to 3-0 start

Three games into the season, Springfield High School’s baseball team is keeping its scorekeepers busy: 35 runs, 42 hits, in 15 innings at the plate.

The Wildcats are 3-0 after beating Northeastern 10-0 on Monday, Kenton Ridge 10-8 on Tuesday and Catholic Central 15-5 on Wednesday.

“We’re hitting the ball well,” coach Rob Cassell said. “What’s nice is on different nights, different guys have stepped up.”

Jordan Moore and Kris Moss each drove in three runs Wednesday. Trey DePriest had five RBIs Tuesday.

Springfield has committed only two errors in its first three games. With the win over KR, it avenged North’s 1-0 loss to KR in 2008.

“Anytime you beat a program like KR, it’s a boost to the program,” Cassell said. “It was good game. KR has got a good team again. They always seem to find the ballplayers.”

Tigers pick up first win of the season

sns060608spWLSsb4.JPG

The West Liberty-Salem High School softball team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday, March 31, beating Catholic Central 14-0.

The Tigers lost their season opener, but are no 1-0 in the Ohio Heritage Conference after Tuesday’s win.

WLS pitchers Emily Detwiler and Alyssa Neff combined for a 5-inning no-hitter. Becka Peterson hit a grand slam.

WLS advanced to the Division III state tournament in 2008 after going through the main portion of the regular season undefeated. While going undefeated won’t happen this year, the Tigers are one of the area’s elite programs.
