District opens convocation to public

Springfield City Schools will open its annual back to school convocation to the public for the first time in recent history, according to Superintendent David Estrop.

The Aug. 25 convocation will be Estrop’s first with the district since joining Springfield this summer.

“It will be more than speeches,” Estrop said. “We will have some fun and I hope you will be pleasantly surprised.

It begins at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria/auditorium Tuesday, Aug. 25 at Springfield High School and all buildings will be closed that morning so staff can attend, said Estrop. (Thanks to SCS parent for letting me know I forgot to include the location).

In many urban districts like Springfield, convocation serves as a celebration of the new school year and is one of the few times during the year that staff from every building across the district are together in one place.

Will you attend the convocation?

Can you please provide some comment on why the convocation is now open to the public when it wasn’t in the past? Why was it closed in the past? Why is it now open? What brought about this change?

Attendance most likely will be rather low, since most parents are at work by that time every morning. If I were lucky enough to able to attend I would.

Curious- If you get the chance to meet Dr. Estrop, you’ll notice that he talks a lot about relationships and partnerships with different sectors of the community. That’s also one of the reasons board members selected him in the spring. He had been successful in building those relationships in Lakewood and then turning those relationships into partnerships that benefited students. Opening the convocation up is part of that. I think we will be seeing more traditionally closed events open up to the larger community under Estrop. As for why it was closed before, I would say it’s probably just that that is how it is done in a lot of districts. Actually convocations, in my experience, tend to be more of a collegiate thing than K-12. And many of them aren’t necessarily closed so much as aren’t publicized as open to the general community. I wasn’t here when Jean Harper was superintendent so I couldn’t say for certain which is was in Springfield’s case. -Megan Gildow

You have to express more your opinion to attract more readers, because just a video or plain text without any personal approach is not that valuable. But it is just form my point of view
