How does Springfield schools hire its employees?
District officials will answer the question posed last month about its hiring practices at tonight’s board meeting.
Wendy Ford, director of human resources for the district, will make a presentation on hiring procedures tonight, according to the district’s agenda.
Last month, representatives from the city’s Coalition for Justice and Equality approached board members about concerns with the district and hiring practices and what they called a “displacement” of black leadership in the district was a big part of that discussion.
The same topic came up at Monday’s CJE forum where the leaders of the group — pastors of several churches in town — asked residents what their concerns with the district were.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. tonight in the city forum at 76 East High Street.

Teachers and support staff in any school district have to be “Highly Qualified” by the state of Ohio’s standards. Ethnic background should have nothing to do with the qualifications of educational personnel.By LizardKingLives

Citizen your right…but that is not always how the real world works. We are often more concerned about leveling the playing field for the employees and as a result produce less quality.Personally I do not care what race, etc a person is if they produce positive results and I imagine the majority of business owners hold the same beliefs and we just proved that race is not as big an issue today as it was even 20 years ago by electing Obama.Am I missing something here was the last superintendent African-American…if so then why was there a displacement of black leadership in the district? The public’s big concern about the district should be that we have a large portion of the high school level students who do not know we had a Cival War in the US and still even more who are not sure who won that Cival War.So to the real concern is how can we ensure our students get a quality education and not as to the skin color/sex of the leadership in the district.By Clark Co Resident

LizardKing, you are absolutely correct in stating that students need to receive a quality education meaning that properly credentialed teachers and support staff must be employed to support that goal. Dr. Harper made the choice to retire at the end of the last school year. I am only aware of one other individual at Central Office that resigned and pursued a different position. (I recall that another individual resigned as well, but he wasn’t African American.) Unfortunately for the district, people don’t stay long. The Superintendent of the Springfield City Schools is subject to intense scrutiny and a tremendous amount of negative public opinion. Who would want to enter a position only to be criticized?
