South High School: Endangered?
South High School is one of the city’s top five endangered historical sites, according to the Springfield Preservation Alliance’s latest list.
Makes sense. The decades old building is mostly empty at this point, with just a few administrative departments in one part of the building. Given the size and age of the building, it’s costly to heat and cool, especially given that the majority of it is now not in use.
Those administrative offices are looking to move out to a more cost efficient space before the winter comes, I’m told. The board has commissioned a special committee to look at facilities in the district and the top of that list is a new space for the central office staff.
South is a pretty building and it’s a style that’s slowly disappearing in Ohio as new schools are built. Some communities have banded together to preserve those buildings and ensure their upkeep and maintenance.
The building could be put to use in some other fashion or sold or fall by the wayside - all fates that have happened to old school buildings across the state.
