Election day tomorrow

The special election for Northeastern’s permanent improvement levy is tomorrow.

The Northeastern levy is the only thing on the August ballot this year, no other candidates or issues. If approved, the one mill levy will raise taxes $30.63 for the owner of a $100,000 home and can only be used for repairs and purchases that will last longer than five years.

This is Northeastern’s fourth attempt at passing the one-mill permanent improvement levy. The district has not collected any permanent improvement dollars since 2004.

The district needs the money to maintain current buildings or to comply with OSFC requirements if the community decides in the future to build new schools.

The Ohio Schools Facilities Commission will fund a portion (about 41 percent in Northwestern) of a project to construct two kindergarten through 12th grade campuses with three buildings on each campus. The OSFC requires school districts to pass at least a .5 mill levy for maintenance of the buildings.

I’m interested to see if the parent committee that formed for this election will have any sway. In past elections the district has not had an organized committee. We’ve had a few letters to the editor in support of the issue, a couple against and a number of Speak Ups.

What do you think will happen with Northeastern’s levy tomorrow?
