School districts and gas prices
In today’s News-Sun, I wrote about how rising gas prices are affecting local schools.
Graham Local Schools, in Champaign County, is one of the largest school districts in Ohio at 182 square miles. As recently as a couple years ago, the district’s fuel spending was around $160,000.
Treasurer Ryan Jenkins is estimating fuel costs to be about $400,000 this school year.
Graham isn’t the only district contending with skyrocketing fuel costs. Southeastern schools spent about $37,000 on fuel last year and expects to spend about $47,000 for the coming year, said Treasurer Brad McKee. Northwestern schools is predicting that its fuel costs will creep toward $190,000 this coming school year. It was $147,000 last year and $104,000 a couple years ago.
The $83,000 increase over the last two years is just slightly more than the district paid for a new bus recently, said Treasurer Dave Bollheimer.
And a state board member is weighing in: the new state board of education blog just popped up on my google alerts.
As Susan Haverkos notes in the blog, her feelings on transportation aid are no secret. She opposes the transportation guarantee given to districts, which she argues allows districts to receive the same amount of money even if they reduce transportation services.
