Northwestern decision coming quickly

Northwestern board members intend to choose a superintendent tomorrow afternoon after communty groups finish interviewing the three finalists, Interim Superintendent Kathy Harper said today.

The board would have to make an offer and the candidate accept that offer before an announcement is made, so we may not have an announcement tomorrow. But it looks like the district will meet its goal of having a new superintendent in place by the start of the new school year.

The candidates are: Tammy Carnahan, assistant superintendent for Greenon schools; Anthony Orr, assistant superintendent for Huber Heights Schools; and Steven D. Miller, educational consultant/planner and retired Sidney City Schools superintendent.

Anyone have a guess who will be chosen? I have a prediction but I’m keeping it to myself.

Based on the input from the community survey the board used to narrow down the applicants, it could be anyone. The survey identified finances, academics/curriculum, communications and facilities as major priorities.

Miller is working as an educational consultant for Freytag and Associates, an architecture firms. A lot of the school design firms have retired educators on staff now to help with plannings new school buildings, working with the district officials and navigating the OSFC process.

He and Orr both come from districts that have fairly significant populations of student sub-groups that tend to not perform as well as their peers, such as racial minorities, economically disadvantaged students and students with disabilities. A lot of smaller districts struggle with these groups, paricularly in terms of meeting AYP goals the federal mandate for year-to-year improvements in subgroups of students. For the last three years Northwestern has not met AYP standards, accoridng to the Ohio Department of Education.

Orr has assisted with Huber Heights’ schools public relations and has worked on levy campaigns, according to his resume. He’s also done hiring, served on several committees and participated in contract negotiations. He became a principal in 2000 at Huber Heights, then became assistant superintendent in 2006, so he was there for the 2006 teachers strike in Huber Heights.

Carnahan works at Greenon schools in a district very similar to Northwestern in terms of student population and size. She became assistant superintendent in the last couple years and prior to that was the principal of Enon Elementary, which moved from continuous improvement to excellent on the state report card under her leadership.

That’s no where near recounting each of their qualification in the various aspects of education, but gives you a little idea of what Northwestern is looking at right now.
