One of my favorite downtime activities is sudoku. I think that the versions you see in the paper might be a bit difficult for kids — especially grade school — but there are lots of sites out there with sudoku especially for children.
Sudoku is a Japanese logic game. You get a box of 9 larger squares each with 9 smaller boxes — a total of 81 squares — with some of the squares filled in with numbers. You have to fill in all the squares with the numbers 1-9, but numbers cannot repeat in the same row, column, or larger box.
These games will help your child brush up on problem-solving, basic math and logic skills.
