Summer learning — June 30
Since July 4 is coming up I went looking for social studies activities. Here’s a fun group outdoors activity that uses mapping, logic and reading from National Geographic for late elementary to middle school students (possibly younger with a little extra parental help).
Letterboxing is sort of like a treasure hunt outdoors. Letterboxers hide a weatherproof box in a publicly accessible place then put clues to it on a Web site like letterboxing.org. There is usually a log book and a rubber stamp and possibly other goodies located in the box. Hunters take the clues and try to figure out where they are.
It seems this practice is just starting in the U.S. but was very popular in Great Britain. Here’s a list of letterbox clues in the area.
Have fun and let us know what you find!
