Does anyone retire?
Twenty three educators have applied to be the next superintendent of Northwestern schools. Look for the full list of applicants in the News-Sun tomorrow.
I stopped by the district’s central offices today and it was pretty much what I had said here yesterday: assistant superintendents at larger schools and superintendents of smaller schools. There were also a few principals looking to make the jump to central office and several retired administrators.
Which leads me to my question today.
Does anyone actually retire anymore?
I know that locally several of the administrators are retire/rehire personnel. Fred Breyer, the interim superintendent Northwestern is looking to replace, came out of retirement to take this post. So did Don Thompson, the interim at Springfield.
But it’s common for districts to hire a retired superintendent on a short-term basis while they search for a permanent candidate.
Close to 20 percent of the applicants for the Northwestern job are retired administrators including one from Graham Local and one from Tecumseh.
Passions can run pretty strong on this topic. While retire/rehire personnel do typically save the districts some money, a lot of people look at this as “double-dipping” and object on an ethical basis.
Others look at it as a way to retain veteran educators at a reduced cost.
Once an educator retires, they are eligible to collect a pension. If the district rehires the administrator, they collect a salary and their pension.
What are your thoughts on retire/rehire practices?
