Local high schoolers to play New York’s Lincoln Center

Stivers School for the Arts’ Jazz Orchestra will take on the Big Apple in grand fashion.

The group was selected to perform at the famed Lincoln Center as distinguished student artists during the New York City Jazz Festival in March.

“This is a great, an unbelievable opportunity for these kids,” said Bill Pflaum, president of the seedling Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports arts programs at Stivers.

Pflaum said the orchestra still must raise about $12,000 of the $30,000 needed for travel and registration expenses.

A benefit concert featuring the Stivers Jazz Orchestra and distinguished jazz trumpeters Derrick Gardner will be held at Stivers Centennial Hall,1313 E. Fifth Street, Dayton, 8 p.m. Saturday, January 21.

Tickets are $10 and can be ordered at theseedlings.org or by calling (937) 546-1675. Patron tickets are $50.

The orchestra’s other fund-raising efforts include CD and candy sales.

The New York festival will feature college jazz performers and four selected high school ensembles. Stivers was not required to audition for its spot.

Festival organizers extended an invitation to the group after hearing it win the 2010 Berklee College of Music National High School Jazz Festival.

The New York City Jazz Festival will also feature Kurt Elling, the Grammy-winning male vocalist, and Bob Mintzer, multiple Grammy Award winner, composer, arranger and Yellowjackets big band leader.
