Dayton Coffee shop ranked among coolest in the nation
An internationally known restaurant industry rating service has discovered what fans of Press coffee shop on Wayne Avenue already knew, the place is very cool.
Zagat has ranked the specialty coffee shop among “The 10 Coolest Independent Coffee Shops Across the US.”
The ten coffee shops were praised for focusing on “quality drinks, perfectly-roasted coffee, a variety of beans, hip baristas and an artistic quality lacking from the name-brand chains out there.”
Here is what Zagat says about Press:
“Customers flock to this Dayton, Ohio coffee shop for a number of reasons: One, they hire skilled baristas to make outstanding drinks; two, the beans they use change constantly to keep things fresh; and three, they don’t cater to the masses with silly drinks like the frappuccino (because really, that’s not coffee). They use beans mainly from Counter Culture and newcomer Dogwood, and the shop sports numerous plugs for those hard at work freelancers, and of course, they also hang local art on the walls. All of this adding up to the perfect indy coffee shop.”
The business at 257 Wayne Avenue is owned by Dayton residents Brett and Janell Barker and opened in January.
Besides coffee, Press offers specialty baked goods from Boosalis and Bombshell bakeshops.

Coffee originates in Ethiopia so if they tell you it comes from there they are not lying despite what Null says. There is a huge difference between the coffee Press is buying and the coffee @ mcDonalds. I’ve been trading coffee for 15 years and have tried coffee from both of the roasters Press uses. They are among the best in the country and they train their accounts to make great coffee. Dayton is lucky to have such a good shop. Support them and let Null support McDonalds.

I also like “The Ohio Coffee Company” located on 5th and Ludlow. That’s another hip place with good beans. I love supporting local businesses!

“barista” and “cool” in the same sentence? Wow. Never heard of this place before. Now I’m sure I’ll never go there. Hint: it’s the people not the coffee.

Well Null…looks like you are fooled by the massed produced McDonalds which erodes our nation today. I have been to Press three times and the coffee/service is FANTASTIC!! Go and support your local vendors rather than mass produced no value/service to our local economy. Keep rolling Press.

But make sure you wear really skinny jeans and a beanie hat halfway off of your head. Oh and a scarf, to make the look complete - then write your novel while you listen to Fleet Foxes…. Or Radiohead for the older folks =)

While the coffee they buy is certainly above average, Press completely fails at customer service. In the handful of times I’ve visited, both owners have been slow to take my order and neither has created a welcoming atmosphere. In my final visit there one owner acted rudely to my kids! I’m thankful Ghostlight Coffee finally opened…

I’ve not tried Press, so I can’t say how their coffee is, but McDonald’s coffee? Really? It’s okay if you are desperate for caffeine and there is NO alternative, but geez, there is SO MUCH BETTER coffee out there.

I’ve walked in there twice and there were too many people hanging out at the counter and no where to sit. So both times I walked back out. Popular and trendy? Yes. But a good place to get a coffee and sit? No. Sad.

Coffee is good, Owners are local people that love the City. It is a complete hipster vibe, but that is fine. I havent had a rude encounter there. I am also intrigued to try ghostlight on Wayne. Kudos to Dayton and PRESS!

Cool? I guess. But I’ve not been too impressed by the coffee. Who cares if they bring in the latest whatever coffee from wherever? Make it good and make it hot. And without the snobbery please, a little of that goes a long way.

Is Ghostlight at the corner of Wax and Wane? Anyway, coffee, like music, has a value to your personal taste. Personally, I like Speedway. But then, I’m a professional driver.

I have been to Press one time. The coffee was not only beautiful but was delicious as well. As far as customer service, my experience was that they were very unfriendly. Could have been a bad day but I haven’t been back because of the unfriendliness and I work in the Oregon Distric.

I’m wondering about the poor comments if they’re talking about the same Press that I’ve been to multiple times? Owner has always been a nice guy. They are a young couple who settled in Dayton after traveling all across the US ‘cause they believe in this town. What’s wrong with the people who can’t support young businesses and people? Dayton = own worst enemy.

Coffee originates from all over the globe grown between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. I personally have mine shipped from Hawaii and roast it myself. Never been to press but from the comments I’m not sure I will either

What other Dayton venue has received a Zagat recommendation let alone won something like top ten nationally. Zagat is an Internationally recognized authority. Consult your conscience if you feel the need to post anything other than congratulations here. Nobody cares which coffee you personally prefer. This is a truly impressive award and cheap shot comments on a thinly read blog will not diminish that fact.

I work downtown but have not tried the Press, so I’ll have to give it a shot now that I know where it is. Honestly, I don’t drink much basic coffee, more of a cappucino type myself, but I can tell a good cup of regular coffee from a bad one, and I can’t choke down McDonald’s coffee, although I have grown to like the Caramel Mocha (hot)..

Press serves the best coffee. I never thought that the owners were unfriendly, just shy personalities. It’s worth stopping by. BTW, for all those living in Dayton, Zagat is pronounced, za-GAT not ZAG-at.

Good to see the regular DDN.com trolls are still at it. I’m from Preble County and every time I’m in Dayton for any reason I stop there for Coffee. I’ve NEVER had a bad experience there and if you have you are to picky for your own good. You’re probably the same person who complains when their coffee temperature is a degree off when you get that second rate swill from Crapdonald’s. You can call keep that crap. As for me…my new Subaru will be wearing a Press sticker with pride. Well done guys! Keep up the good work!

coffee: not so bad, but over-hyped (and certainly better than the mass-produced)…owners: transparent…setting: sure, downtown needs all the help it can get, but the place is relatively barren, bland, and not very comfortable…just not “cozy”…So, improve the atmosphere, and maybe there’s hope!

O Freunde, nicht diese Töne… Why do DDN comments show so much hate? This is a success story in Dayton, and congratulations are in order. Period. Press is a Dayton business, owned by Dayton residents. Support it if you’d like. Go elsewhere if you prefer. But, WHY trash a successful local small business? Why?

More than half of the people who commented here say the attitude of the owners is bad or needs improving. That does say something to the owners whether they know it or not. I’m sure it’s a wonderful product but you have to have customer service 95-100 percent of the time to please the masses. I do agree support our local shops. Vote for Pete to the Hall of fame.

Considering that this is their first year running a business (and they’re still in their mid 20s!), I’d say this is pretty damn impressive. They have a clear vision for the aesthetics of the shop (which also hosts monthly local art shows) and new ideas they’re trying to implement. Of course there’s going to be kinks, but even so - they’re accomplishing amazing things. I go to Press for great coffee and to see some friendly faces. I think many may be mistaking shyness/awkwardness for rudeness - and honestly, I think Brett and Janell are really improving in those areas too (I should be one to talk - most awkward person ever.) I go to Ghostlight also, it’s a cozier spot for reading, but I much prefer the coffee and design of Press. (Um, sometimes I go to both in one day, ha.)

I have been to coffee houses all over the country, having just arrived from San Francisco, which has some of the best coffee in the U.S. I agree 100% that this is among the top coffee houses I have ever been too. And the service is fine. They put love and care into the coffee, the space, the art, even the cleanliness of the bathroom is truly exceptional. It is the cleanest coffee house I have ever been to. There is nothing elitist in having quality coffee, good ambience, quality art and playing music that is not approved by Hollywood corporations for mass consumption. Just because people are willing to experiment and go beyond the most boring, banal and ordinary with how they dress, etc. doesn’t mean they think less of you for being afraid to experiment—that is your own insecurity speaking. If you have to wait for a cup of coffee there, it is because they take their time and make sure it is the top quality. I am happy to spend my money there rather than with some corporation whose one and only goal is to get your money by any means available.
