Daffodil assault hits Dayton; ‘divas’ help add 10,400 flowers
Daffodils will pop up this spring in unexpected places in and near downtown Dayton.
A group calling itself “Downtown Dayton Daffodil Divas” purchased daffodils bulbs to be planted in approved and not-so-approved spaces around the community.
Thirty volunteers- several from the group Generation Dayton - planted 3,000 plants Saturday donated by area residents Lindsey Clark, Jean Woodhull, Jane Sheridan and Tami Whalen.
The divas and others have purchased about 10,400 plants the last three years. Lindsey Clark said everyone should work to enhance life here.
“It’s to beautify the city that we live in,” Clark said. “We are all tied to downtown Dayton, whether we utilize it or not.”
Daffodils were planted this year in Cooper Park, Garden Station, the Oregon District and near the Dayton Metro Library and Cooper Lofts. They were added to places like empty flower beds and patches of land.
In past years, the plants have been donated to University of Dayton, Sinclair Community College and planted in the Marie Aull Tribute Garden at Carillon Park and the Francine van der Hoeven garden in Oakwood’s Centennial Park.
