Cincinnati filmmaker bringing horror flick to town
Cincinnati-based independent filmmaker Lee Zellars will bring his tale of revenge and horror to Dayton’s Neon Movies, 130 East Fifth Street, for a special screening 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
“I always describe it as ‘Friday the 13th’ meets ‘Cadillac Records’,” the 49-year-old said. Admission is $10.
Zellars wrote “Purple Haze,” with Anthony Russell, his partner at RozMary Basement Flick Production.
It is the story of Haitian musician Damian Ship.
Ship, the son of a Voodoo priest, becomes possessed after a record company CEO swindles him out of his earnings.
The movie was completed on a $2,000 budget.
Zellars, a photographer of 15 years, did much of the work himself. People shouldn’t be turned off because it is an independent film, he said.
“The production and quality and story line and film is really unique,” Zellars said. He hopes to find a distribution deal for the film and is screening it around the state to drum up a supportive fan base.
This is the fourth film for his production company. A fifth film, a dark humor love story about a vampire, is in the works.
