Flash mob breaks out at Taste of the Miami Valley

Some of those who attended the Miami Valley Restaurant Association’s Taste of the Miami Valley on Saturday found themselves smack dab in the middle of a flash mob.

CPAM - Children’s Performing Arts of Miamisburg - dance to “I’m A Believer” from “Shrek the Musical” during the event held at RiverScape MetroPark.

About 70 people danced in the mob, according to Stacia Burlingame of Miamisburg. She helped coordinate things with Amy Zahora, the restaurant association’s executive director.

The action was captured by Dayton’s Niche Productions.

The energetic dance was choreographed by Wright State University student Korey Harlowe and took about a month to learn, Burlingame said.

This isn’t CPAM’s first flash mob. The theater group did a “Wizard of OZ” flash mob at Dayton Mall in April.

What do you think?

A well-stocked supply of rotten tomatoes ought to be kept on hand in all public areas, for the sole purpose of reacting to flash mobs. Then flash vegetable bombardment squads would be the next big public social craze.

This must be what happens when unemployment rates are high—-people with time on their hands and nothing productive to do.

I think this is a totally great way for kids to spend their spare time- at least they aren’t using drugs and boozin’ it up! I’d love to do one of these! I think they are hilarious!

Cute but I can’t believe it took a month to learn those moves.

@knowit, it seems you are the one with too much time on your hands. These kids were being productive. I don’t think you can say as much.

It’s really not a flash mob if its planned/coordinated by/in conjunction with the Restaurant Association or the people putting on a particular event. We have a word for that already, its called ‘entertainment’.

I enjoyed the performance! Of course it wasn’t perfect but come on people its called live theater for a reason! find something better to do with your time than making hateful comments towards a fun performance.

@Bob, you’re exactly right, but ‘flash mob’ is the cool phrase nowadays.

Hey, agreed, no problem and have fun if it’s coordinated entertainment. However, if you’re hijacking someone else’s event, then yes, your flash mob qualifies for tomato bombardment.

These are school age kids doing something to promote their group. So lighten up! I guess it’s better to sit on your butt all day and make fun of other people.

@ chrmar: it wasn’t hijacked. I know for a fact they were asked to perform in some way, shape, or form and the group decided to do a flash mob instead of doing a traditional “get on stage and sing” kind of performance. So please, no tomatoes :)

The kids did a great job. People need to know that most of these kids do Not have a dance background and did not practice for the entire month, just a few times. Let’s see the nay sayers try to learn all that and have the guts to get out there and dance!
