Will graphic FDA required warning labels stop people from smoking?

Apparently believing the old saying “a picture is worth 1,000 words,” the FDA plans to require decidedly more graphic and prominent warning labels on cigarette packaging and advertisements starting September 2012.

Warnings as they will appear on labels.

“These warnings mark the first change in cigarette warnings in more than 25 years and are a significant advancement in communicating the dangers of smoking.” the agency says on its website.

There are 10 labels in all. One features smoke around an infant. Another features a dead body. Still others feature body parts damaged by cigarette smoke.

What do you think? Will the warnings make people stop smoking?

People whose mental capacity allows them to make the decision to smoke will not understand why there are warnings on the package. Natural selection. Let it be. Let it be.

I smoked for 23 years before I quit, and I can say that from my own perspective, these warnings won’t make a bit of difference. There’s nobody alive who doesn’t know that smoking is bad for their health. It’s a personal decision, and the warnings have little to no impact on that decision. All these new warnings will do is force cigarette manufacturers to use a four-color printing process instead of two colors, which will drive costs up even more.

Why is there so much focus on smoking but hardly any on drinking? I’d much rather see pictures of innocent DUI victims or graphic pictures of DUI crashes on cans and bottles of alcohol. Now that Ohio passed the smoking law the only people smokers are really hurting are themselves for the most part, however, drunk drivers still kill thousands of innocent people each year.

I’ve got to agree with Dave, not only will this not work, it will become a new cost to drive up prices and spending as well…

If I smoked, I would just tape paper over the photos so I didn’t have to look at them. Maybe some enterprising soul will market contact paper-type coverings with flowers or other pretty things. Call them “pack wrappers”. Personally, I wish govt would focus upon things that matter instead of preaching against people’s freedom to make lifestyle decisions.

Nothing short of executions will stop smokers. The commercials don’t work. The testimonials don’t work. The cessation aids don’t work. Yul Brenner didn’t work. The laws don’t work. Whew, I need a cig.

Will not work, and to a*s to what Dave said, they will probably then write-off the new printing process as a business expense and have their tax bills reduced, while making more money when they raise the price for the new process. @UrbanDweller: The difference is that everyone who smokes affects themselves and those around them whereas not everyone who drinks goes out and drives afterwards. Personally, I don’t agree with either as has been said, won’t make a difference to the smoker, they already know the potential outcomes, might make someone change their mind about starting, I suppose.

I expect they will become the next Pokeman cards. Today’s kids see all that stuff in their video games anyhow. They will be collecting them.

No it will not stop me from smoking. And personally wish people would get off the anti smoking band wagon. I am so sick and tired of people telling me what to do with MY life. And government needs to get their bloody hands out of everyones damn life. Lord forbid someone makes a choice that the bible thumping “righteous” never do anything wrong pricks that try to tell everyone else how to live their life !

Karen, I do believe you should have the right to smoke all of the unfiltered cigarettes you want, especially if it will calm you down. (I hope you don’t kiss your kids with that mouth.) In fact, if you haven’t had the chance to have offspring, I will purchase you all of the Lucky Strikes you can use.
