Ohio company pulls ads from ABC over plans to cancel soaps
Erica Kane has long been known to reach for the arm of a strong man in times of danger.
An Ohio man with “suction power” may just save her and rest of the residents of Pine Valley and Llanview PA from the chopping block.
Brian Kirkendall of Hudson has joined the fight to save ABC soaps “One Life to Live” and “All my Children.”
As an executive at Hoover based in Glenwillow, Ohio, Kirkendall might have more pull than most.
Kirkendall announced he is yanking Hoover ads from ABC because his wife, mother and customers are fans of the long-running daytime dramas.
Since Hoover’s decision was announced, fans of the shows have flocked to Hoover’s Facebook site to voice there appreciation.
A grassroots effort is afoot to save the programs.
“I’m not trying to be a martyr,” Kirkendall told the AP. “I’m just reacting to what our consumers said.”
ABC announced last week that it will cancel the shows and replace them with weight loss and cooking shows.
What do you think? Are the days for soap opera long gone?

As a future retired baby boomer, I’m not going to bother watching weight loss and cooking shows during the day. Give me something with a story line please!

I am long-time over 40 yrs, fan of AMC. Keep both AMC and OLTL on the air! Recommend go back to 1/2 hr show and spice up the characters and beef up the storylines with more action drama and “romantic” scenes. Viewers are on the move these days and really don’t have an the time to sit an hr and watch.

I’ve been watching my soaps for more than 30 years and I’m heartbroken about these decisions. These shows are my escape from reality and reality shows. Plus - the last thing we need is another cooking or self-help show. We got multiple networks dedicated to that. ABC has 21 other hours to program in a day. Leave our soaps alone!

Please don’t cause a 63 year old woman to have withdrawal symptoms!!!! On the serious side, these soaps have been a part of my life and thousands of others since the beginning. We love our soaps and we love the characters. Thank you for listening.

Thank you Mr Kirkendall for joining our fight. As a long time soap fan it’s disgraceful what ABC/Disney is doing to the network…The viewers are being heard. Come join “Protest ABC Across America” on facebook. WE WILL BE HEARD!!!

Me personally I am not a ABC soap fan. But I fighting for them because my 70+ year soap Guiding Light and my 50+ year soap As the World Turns was cancelled off of CBS. My hope is that Soap fans everywhere no matter the station will join forces and fight for our soaps!

It’s obvious that Brian Frons began the slow methodical execution of these soaps sometime back. I no longer trust ABC or Disney or anything they have to say on the subject. They don’t care about their fans and lifelong viewers. I feel betrayed. Robin Strasser was willing to speak out in support of the fans. I have new respect for her integrity. Hoover will be the only company I purchase vacuums from moving forward because they have shown themselves to care about their consumers. Let’s face it; business is about the bottom dollar but Brian Frons crossed the line and ABC and Disney don’t seem to care.

ABC made a huge mistake cancelling these two iconic shows. Nobody will tune into the garbage they have proposed to take OLTL and AMC’s place

I have watched both All My Children and One Life To Live for Decades. I was there when the people portrayed on them went through good times bad times happy sad celebrations and grief. Cried with them laughed with them. Thank you Hoover Very Much for your support in Saving Our Soaps. I have been Loyal for Decades. Which means I have been Loyal to ABC as well. Where is the Appreciation for that? I ask that all sponsors of ABC and Disney pull their ads from the networks and their affiliates. We ask that they join us in support of saving our soap operas. Also ask that they join in and not watching any programming on ABC/Disney except for the Soap Operas. Not go to their parks, not buy Disney toys, not go to their movies. We have been loyal and get a slap in the face for our loyalty from them. Save our soaps please. thank you +

I work, probably would not watch them if I was home, but there have been a lot of prime time shows cancelled that I was a fan of, so what is the big deal with networks cancelling daytime shows? No one seems to get up in arms over the prime time shows when they get cancelled.

I’ve been watching ABC soaps since I was a little girl. It’s my favorite means of escapism. I am beyond fed up with Brian Frons and his bad judgment. If I wanted a talk show or a cooking show, I’d tune in to one of my other channels. The fact that ABC/Disney seems to ignore their audience leaves me less than desirous to have my (regularly) planned family vacation @ Disney this year. I have canceled our trip/stayat their hotel and their park. I will ONLY watch ABC for its soaps and then, when the soaps end, so does my ABC viewership and any Disney vacations. Thank you, Hoover, for listening to your consumers - ABC could learn from you. I knew there was a reason I always buy Hoover - they really are dependable.

@ Big Deal… If the prime-time shows you loved so much had had an audience that were collectively up in arms and actually rallied vociferously against their cancellations, it actually might have made a difference. Like when the networks canceled … Roswell, Friday Night Lights, Southland, etc. Each of these shows was brought back because fans made noise. LOTS of noise. Being an avid, loyal fan of the current shows being axed by ABC, it’d my hope (and seemingly, the hope of many others)that we be heard. That ABC actually take notice. With a lot of noise and a little luck, we may be able to reverse the decision of the dolt who runs ABC daytime.

I still cannot believe the lame decision by ABC to cancel two shows that bring in 2.3 & 2.7 million viewers daily. Do they honestly believe that I will DVR a cooking or lifestyle show? I will drop off of the daytime landscape or I will begin watching Y&R and B&B. Seriously, ABC do you think loyal fans will stay after being treated so heartlessly? Not a chance! I have already stopped watching GMA & ABC primetime shows. Do not plan on watching ANY new ABC shows unless the cancellations are revoked.

ABC what are you thinking?? I love my soaps and cannot believe it is cheaper for ABC to have more cooking/talk shows. All My Children and One Life To Live have been a daily tradition for 30 years. Please help stop this from happening.

Personally I do not watch soap operas. However do we REALLY need more cooking and weight loss shows? Plus, isn’t that an interesting combination, add the weight and then take it off!

I have been watching AMC & OLTL for 40 years. These shows have opened our eyes to human frailties, conflicts, controversy & triumphs. These shows are my escape from reality for a few hours a day. ABC/Disney should reconsider this decision. I applaud Mr. Kirkendall for taking this stand for the viewers. Believe me when I say TV DOES NOT need another cooking show or talk show & I WILL NOT be watching AMC & OLTL replacement shows. I may just join an ABC boycott!!!!!

Please, please change your minds and don’t cancel these AMC or OLTL!!! They are the best that ABC has to offer. Brian Frons is a guy who is a “serial killer.” He doesn’t like soaps so therefore, neither does anyone else……….WRONG
