Centerville student in running to win $250,000
A Centerville High School junior is trying to turn inspiration into cold hard cash.
Shirin Dey is in the running for a $250,000 Pepsi Refresh grant for the renovate the Lower Ninth Ward Village Community Center in New Orleans. The money would also be used to provide courses in computing, sound engineering and other areas.
Dey, the daughter of Dr. Malay and Hyacinth Dey, visited New Orleans last year with a youth group from Incarnation Parish in Centerville.
She was inspired to come up with a project for the Lower Ninth Ward, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina Katrina.
To continue in the contest, Dey’s project must be ranked above 100 by Monday, Jan. 31. To vote for it, visit the project’s website or you can text 105560 to Pepsi (73774). Those eager to see her win can do both.
