Dr. Laura calls it quit after N-word scandal, says she wants to regain First Amendment rights
Things got hot so Dr. Laura is getting out of the kitchen by the end of the year.
In the wake of her N-word meltdown last week, Dr. Laura Schlessinger announced on “Larry King Live” Tuesday, Aug. 17, night that she is leaving her show to regain her “First Amendment rights.”
“I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry or some special-interest group deciding this is a time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates and attack sponsors,” Dr. Laura said.
The 30-year veteran got bit last week after she used the N-word no less than 11 times in five minutes in response to a question from a caller.
Dr. Laura obviously forgot one important things about the First Amendment. It gives her the right to say what she wants and other people the right to say they are offended.
Schlessinger had apologized for offending so many.

I can respect her decision, but the case is closed and everyone should move on from it. Things happen. I’ve always liked her show;things will be fine in the end.

I read the entire transcript, and I didn’t care for Dr. Laura’s tangential rant about the N-word. It is not a word I grew up with, and if I ever heard it before the 4th grade, I never picked up on it. Yeah, 4th grade. I heard it at school, and had to ask the kid who said it what it was. I immediately picked up that it was used in a hurtful way — or at least with the intent to be hurtful. Seldom heard it after that, though. One of my cousins used the word as a slang word for Brazil nuts. I went for years without eating them simply because of that association. As an adult, I cringed when I heard my wife’s WWII veteran grandfather use the epithet, skipped it when I read Tom Sawyer to my children, and just the other day when cracked open my 1914 copy of Uncle Tom’s Cabin to see what originated the term “Uncle Tom”, was taken aback by the word before me in black and white, so to speak. I am still amazed at the prevalence it has in modern US society, especially by the people who would take offense. It is a word, certainly, but it would be best left to join other English words in obscurity. The N-word has baggage. It carries with it the vitriol and demeaning connotations of the slave era. It bears the mark of blatant racism, as opposed to even the ‘soft racism’ of “clean” and “articulate”. Even in her attempted discussion of the prevalent use of the word on HBO (her example) and the apparent double-standard with regard to its stigma, I think Dr. Laura was unwise in actually pronouncing the word. Engaging in an activity you are attempting to denounce is not the right way to denounce it.

But a black radio personality can call whites “crackers” and get away with it. Someday, there will be a tremendous backlash against this double-standard. Beware the backlash. Since democrats refuse to allow many urban blacks to learn economics, it will be very easy for “crackers” to work the backlash.

Whomever or whatever controls your emotions controls you. Will you take control of your emotions, or will you let a word control your emotions? Come on people, know amount of history can be that controlling, as to “force” you to react in a certain way. The time to grow up is now, and whether you believe it or not, when you blame a word for your emotions, you take the responsibility away from yourself, and that gives you the right to react any way you please, without consequences. Do you really want that? I think not. Bottom line, it’s just a word.

As a Sub-Saharan- Nubian (my new name for what I am, a Negro), I suggest using SSN’s when referencing the African people of color. Agree? Don’t agree? I don’t use the “N” word, never have, and have been questioned about it by my “brothers” who wouldn’t pause using “honky” or “cracker” in reference to our melanin challenged brothers. Hypocracy is ramapant in the SSN area of life…and being questioned about it puts my brothers in a quandry. If you’ve been found out to be a hypocrite, admit it.

Um… thanks, Kyle L. How much do I owe you for your psychoanalysis? Do you take Blue Cross/Blue Shield? And where can I pick up your detailed analysis? The N-word is inappropriate in any and all sectors of modern society. Like I tell my kids, a good rule of thumb is not to use any word that you wouldn’t want to hear your pastor using from the pulpit. (Certain scientific & medical exclusions may apply. Your mileage may vary.)

I think she and everyone else should have a freedom of speech. It’s know different than the blacks singing in there rap songs calling each other the N word. Black people think we owe them something and we don’t owe them squat!! Go Doctor Laura keep saying what’s on your mind.

“Cracker” is extremely pale compared to the N-word. It carries no baggage whatsoever. Getting a bit less pale would be the term “briar” here in Dayton. And interestingly, it is such a taboo that you don’t see even quoted in print in Dayton where it is a common pejorative. But if aren’t of Appalachian background and you want to get your butt kicked, try calling somebody who is a “dumb briar.” Nevertheless, there is no historical equivalent for the connotations the N-word evokes.

I guess I have to wonder why a black man can say the n-word but a white person can’t and if they do they are fired and ostracized by society. Then it came to me as why this is, blacks have no mores and that changes everything.

Anyone who reads the whole transcript and doesn’t see her point and where she was taking the caller is either illiterate or extremely judgmental about anything in life not the norm. The punishment appears to be self inflicted and prudent based on the narrow minded comments made in this forum and others.

I have absolutely no problem with what Dr. Laura said. Her show wasn’t my cup of tea, but I understand why she’d want to get out if she can’t even speak her mind when she is paid specifically to speak her mind.

The “N” word originated in the south as a slang term for Negro, probably as a result of uneducated illiterate white folks propensity for slurring words and butchering the King’s English. I doubt if it’s intent was any more disparaging at the time then the word it originated from. However that obviously is not the case today. The word is alive and well in the hearts and minds of a large percentage of White America though most deny this. Dr. Laura has no business holding the position she now relinquishes. It is unfortunate that many of those in similar positions who maintain better self control are not relinquishing theirs as well for they are a blight on Race relations and continue to breed more Racism. At the same time Afro Americans do themselves and the cause of equality a disservice in insisting on maintaining the right to brandish the word whenever and wherever they like. It displays the fact that they are not ready to move on and that they are just as guilty as white America of racial prejudice. Unless and until the word is removed from all Americans lexicon I do not believe true peace, understanding and empathy for each other will occur.

It’s an emotionally charged word and full of nuance. If Dr. Laura shouldn’t use it -even if trying to weakly make a point- then neither should anyone else, especially someone who is claiming to be offended by it. When black America stops using is, we can put it to rest. Black/urban America is responisble for the re-birth of this disgusting word…it is immortalized in far too many rap songs, comedy routines and TV programs. I say, set an example for everyone and stop using it first. Most people in America know exactly what is meant when the word is used, so who do we think we are fooling…?

I found the actual recording of what was said. She used the word in reference to what was being said on comedy acts and in rap music. She did not lie that it gets used in that content. I do think she was saying it for shock value and rating but is that any more wrong than a black journalist reporting that a whit person used the N-word without giving links to what was actually said? Is She a racist maybe, but to automatically assume she is because of she actually said the word in the context that she did is wrong to but after reading this journalist article it makes me suspect someone of being racist.

It is too bad that Jade sought advice from Dr. Laura. Had she known about Ms. HeartBeat she could have gotten much better advice about her interracial marriage and her husband’s racist White friends, respectful concern, empathy and an answer to her question!! I think Dr. Laura is on her way out. She’s been in the advice field for 30 years, its time for her to step down and make room for someone that has more to offer younger people that face relationship and dating issues that were not even thought of in her era. I think the way she handled “Jade” was appalling, rude and disgusting. There was nothing professional or admirable about how she responded, and her words to “Jade” were nothing but verbal abuse. It is a sad day when someone in a position of guidance of lost souls behaves in such a poor manner. She needs to be gone from the airwaves.
