Local otters to head to West Virginia for vacation

Habitat renovations mean a ‘Good’ vacation for Boonshoft Museum of Discovery’s river otters Shiloh and Sushi.

The popular pair will stay The Good Zoo in Oglebay Park, W. Va. during the $900,000 renovation work at the museum, 2600 DeWeese Parkway, Dayton, set to start January.

The otters will leave town Wednesday, Jan. 6, with snacks - 306 frozen pounds of smelt, sardines, and homemade “otter patties.”

The museum’s on-site zoo is being upgraded to meet current industry standards and best practices, according to the a Boonshoft spokeswoman Kristy Creel said.

Madison the bobcat will also be moved temporarily to another facility during the work expected to be complete in six months.

Ventilation improvements will be made and the habitats will be increased in size for several animals, Creel said, noting that the result will be more natural and diverse environments.

Some compatible species will share habitats.

Most of the Boonshoft’s other animals - Houdini the Screech Owl, Pistachio the Opossum, and Isaac the Red Spotted Newt - will remain at the museum, Creel said.

Regarding the 900k renovation: we are in a huge economic malaise and the Feds award them a $112k grant for unnecessary expenses like this. We going go broke, soon. Think before you vote. All the current economic activity is gov’t and NPO’s. This “recovery” is not real.

I worked at the museum in the Summer of 1989 through the Youth Employment Program caring for the animals. Feeding the otters was always fun. I hope they get a nice new home with plenty of room!

Nice to know that our wonderful government can send otters on vacation yet won’t come off of a dime to help people like myself with cancer treatments.

Quite you’re whining over the pennies being spent to upgrade this facility. I didn’t hear you folks whine over the billions we spent in Iraq or other dumps in the Middle East. So if this upgrade provides a few jobs for construction industry, it helps maybe keep some off of unemployment for 6 months. Great for Dayton.

This story was posted a week ago and appears on the front page of the newspaper today. It may be news, but it is OLD news. The DDN web site is nothing more than a trash can full of feature articles that may be inserted as “filler “when the editors have no news. So sad.
