Does newspaper’s racy headline go too far?

The Washington City Paper is defending its decision to use a very, very, very off-color headline on its front page.

“You put me out in Denver ’cause I wouldn’t (preform a sex act)” the newspaper’s cover read Tuesday, July 7.

Washington City Paper Cover. We’ve cropped out the bad words cuz they are bad words.

We can’t tell you exactly what the cover said, but you can read it yourself here.

Read Washington Post story featuring ticked off readers who yelled at a City Paper reporter here.

The quote on the cover related to an article about former Washington D.C. mayor Marion Barry and his alleged sexcapades with ex-aide Donna Watts-Brighthaupt.

Barry, who spent the 90s cracked out, is now a D.C. city councilman.

The alternative weekly’s editor defended the cover in the Washington Post article.

“It’s worth putting it out there, and it’s the truth,” Erik Wemple said. Sometimes the truth is vulgar.”

True, but still.

What do you think? Does the cover cross the line?

I think a much better (and less controversial) way to word it would have been “…’cause I wouldn’t put out” That being said, it’s Marion Barry - does this really surprise anyone?

The headline does not go to far. it gets straight to the point and directly quotes the lil dk sucker. No way to say her words were twisted or anything like that. Thats what we need more direct quotes. Plus this is not news, seems more of a personal issue that the dK sucker has with the former Mayor. Keep it up Berry. Stay hard bro!

Even though I got a hearty chuckle, that was WAY beyond inappropriate.
