Is Facebook a brain drain?

Everyone knows Facebook can be a time sucker, but maybe it is sucking on brain cells as well.

A recent Ohio State University study has found a link between Facebook use and lower graders in college.

College students with Facebook accounts have lower grade point averages than students who have not signed up for the social networking site, according to the pilot study.

Facebook users had GPAs between 3.0 and 3.5. Non-users had GPAs between 3.5 and 4.0, the study reported.

About 220 Ohio State students took part in the study. More than half of the participants had Facebook accounts.

The study will be presented Thursday, April 16, at the annual meeting of the American Education Research Association in San Diego.

“We can’t say that use of Facebook leads to lower grades and less studying - but we did find a relationship there,” said Aryn Karpinski, co-author of the study.

The fact that Facebook user spent less time studying should come to no surprise.

Who has time to study when there is Mafia War to play and photos to tag?

I don’t think it’s brain cell damaging, I think it is that students aren’t spending as much time studying as they are on Facebook. I know that I’m guilty of it!

I don’t think there is any validity to it draining brain cells! That is too small of a study to really be valid anyway. The Facebook folks may just be the more social ones anyway and it’s a personality trait rather than Facebook itself being responsible. If it wasn’t Facebook taking their time - it would likely be something else.

220 students is a pretty small sample size considering the millions of college students on Facebook right now. I have a GPA above 3.5 and check Facebook at least five times a day. What explains that? The researchers say that they cannot claim that Facebook causes lower grades, but do they postulate what that “relationship” really amounts to? I wonder what the average GPA of all college age Facebook students is.

I highly disagree with this study. I had an undergrad GPA of 3.7 and a graduate GPA of 4.0 and used Facebook throughout both! They used too small of a sample to draw any real and definitive conclusions.
