Three local people win ‘Image’ awards
Three area resident received excellence awards at the recent Ohio Public Images Awards ceremony held in Columbus.
The honor is awarded for increasing public awareness and understand of those with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities.
James Tuck of Dayton was award the Self-advocate of the Year award, considered the top honor.
Tuck, a community volunteer and 34 year Montgomery County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities employee, was a major focus in the documentary “Lest We Forget: Silent Voices ” coordinated by Partners For Community Living.
The project chronicles stories of people who spent years locked away in state institutions.
“Dayton Daily News” sports columnist Tom Archdeacon won for articles on Dustin Carter, then a Hillsboro High School wrestler who lost all four limbs after being diagnosed with a rare blood disorder.
ABC22/Fox 45 anchor Kathy Hart won an award for a piece on 9-year-old competitive swimmer Anna Amend of Colerian Twp. Amend has one arm.
