DECA mock trial team advances to state finals
When a group of high school students from Dayton Early College Academy entered the 2009 Ohio Mock Trial district competition last month, nobody gave them a whiff of chance.
That turned out to be a mistake.
A team from DECA not only toppled more experienced schools in its district and region but is now prepping for the state finals which begin Thursday, March 5 at the Franklin County Courthouse in Columbus.
“As a school this is only our second year competing,” said 16 year old mock trial lawyer Brittish Calloway. “Last year the DECA team didn’t even advance past the first round. But we worked very hard this year and I knew we had as much of a chance as anyone else.”
DECA social studies teacher and mock trial leader Michelle Szucs said the road to the state finals was not without potholes.
“We competed at the regionals Friday, Feb. 20, and were told that our teams failed to advance,” Szucs said. “However, on Monday, Feb. 23, I got a phone call from the State Mock Trial committee.
They said there had been a scoring glitch and we actually did win our trial. We’re going to the state!”
