Who’s out this week on ‘Project Runway’?
Oakwood-native and University of Cincinnati graduate Althea Harper got little screen time on “Project Runway,” with a film noir-inspired dress that was uninspired to my eyes, but good enough to get her to the next round.
This week’s challenge? In one day, design an outfit for a new film character inspired by your selected genre. The genres? Action/adventure, film noir, period piece, science fiction, and western.
As a big Sci-Fi fan, I was looking forward to seeing what Ra’mon and Nicholas did with their garments. In spite of his tremendous talent, Ra’mon clearly can’t get it together. With two hours left in the day, he scraps his dress (“Kermit the Frog gone wrong,” he said of it) and cobbles together what Heidi calls, a “hot green mess.”
I’m no fan of Nicholas — I wrote last week of his “undeservedly arrogant” demeanor, and condemned his “questionable taste.” The preponderance of screen time afforded to him initially gave me hope that this might be his last episode. But as his outfit comes together (admittedly it looks cool), and he is lauded by the judges, it’s clear that he’s not only safe, but in the running to win!
Of those in the middle, Irina is struggling to get out of the workroom in time for the runway show. This in spite of her immunity — move on, Irina, you can’t be eliminated! I’m a real fan of Logan’s outfit; the battle scars on his model as she walks down the runway are a nice touch. (I sympathize with Carol Hannah, who complains that working at a table across from Logan is endlessly distracting.)
The top three? I really like Epperson’s western-inspired dress; it reminds me of Joss Whedon’s “Firefly” with its rough edges and romantic sensibility. Christopher’s dress is my favorite this week; he ignored Tim’s critique about his sleeveless dress, but it pays off with second place. The winner? Nicholas. My world is upside down.
The bottom? Gordana’s flapper dress is impeccably made, but the judges are disappointed by its anonymity; where is Gordana’s point of view? Louise Black is on the stage for the first time (landing on the bottom sends her into tears as she leaves the runway); instead of a garment true to her cherished noir, her model walks the runway looking like a French maid. Who’s out? Ra’mon. Clearly talented, and lauded by the judges for his creativity and ambition; he is eliminated after a massive failure of execution.
Who do you think should have gone home this week? What did you think of the winning design?
