Jordin Sparks takes the prize on ‘AI’
Live from the Kodak Theatre it’s finally here the American Idol Season Six finale. I’ve heard arguments all day both ways as to who is going to win the big prize.
Let’s get it over with right away…Congratulations Jordin Sparks! Both Jordin and Blake will have stellar careers ahead I’m sure although I’m sure quite different.
Now let’s go back a couple hours in time…
Gwen Stefani performs her new single 4 in the Morning. She’s jus really impressed me this year, in part because of her stint as an Idol mentor, as an incredible talent and genuine person. AND someone who can perform LIVE!
Kelly Clarkson finally returns to the American Idol stage. Singing her current single Never Again. I’ve heard really mixed reactions to this release. Either you love it or hate it. Rumor has it that her record producers just sent her back into the studio because they didn’t like the album that this single reigns from. We’ll see. I’ve been anxiously waiting for this next album so I hope whatever she releases is good.
You know I’m not crazy about filler but the silly auditions were kind of a fun reminder of how deluded some people really are. Then they call this crazy yellow bird lady up to get an award and she literally lays Ryan Seacrest on the floor with a huge kiss. This is just silly and a terrible waste of our time.
The top six guys sang a song arranged by the musical producer of Take Six. So I actually enjoyed the harmony of this song although I think the background singers were doing most of the harmonizing. After hearing these guys sing again I may actually buy tickets to the Idol tour. I kind of missed them! I also have to say and I’ll prepare the backlash that some of these guys can definitely out sing Blake.
Smokey Robinson follows and I’m watching him wondering how his face keeps from cracking. I wonder how many plastic surgeries and botox injections this man has had.
Because Blake didn’t get to beat box in the final song last night he is giving a chance to do his thing with original beat boxer Doug E Fresh. This is where this kid is most comfortable and is actually much better this other guy. He’s so good at this no matter what happens I hope he can make this kind of record.
More filler, blah, blah, blah
The top six girls perform and are quickly joined by Gladys Knight. Now here is a real superstar. And to be fair to Smokey Robinson I think Gladys has probably had a little surgery herself but at least she looks real. I got a little choked up when Gladys is singing Midnight Train to Georgia with Melinda on one side and LaKisha on the other. These ladies have some pretty amazing voices.
Seeing Paula Abdul standing and singing and dancing reminds me that we did not see one standing ovation by the judges this year. I’m not sure that we’ve ever made it through an entire season without at least one do you folks remember?
Tony Bennett returns to the Idol stage to perform from his Duets album. I can’t remember how old this guy is but it doesn’t matter because he’s still got it!
BeBe and CeCe Winans visit the Idol stage with Melinda Doolittle singing with them instead of behind them. In my opinion Melinda was just as good as any member of this spiritual duet.
Cool, Blake and Jordin both get brand new Ford Mustangs. Wonder of they knew?
Yeah Carrie Underwood returns to once again sing I’ll Stand By You as she did on the Idol Gives Back show. I think I like this version than the original. This is someone else who needs to hurry up with another album. I’ve had every word memorized to her current album for a year now. Need new material.
Big News from Clive Davis The huge explosion of Chris Daughtry has broken records and he is the biggest selling artist of the year in all genres. Still in the top 10 after six month and it’s spawn two #1 singles which he co-wrote and has sold over 2 ½ million.
Mr. Davis presents a superfluous award representing 6 million albums sold in the US to Carrie Underwood. Not that this isn’t a huge accomplishment but somehow I think her Grammy’s, Country Music Awards, among others will mean a bit more to her.
The African Children’s choir was just awesome! Those twinkling eyes and big smiles did you see the kid with the missing front teeth? I wonder what this trip was like for them. Do they travel often or was this something special? So adorable!
Sanjaya performs live with Joe Perry from Aerosmith. Wonder how many times his rocker friends will mock him for that decision?
Huge surprise guests Green Day singing a John Lennon song, Working Class Hero, from the upcoming Darfur relief album. Magnificent.
Taylor Hicks is up next singing his new single Heaven Knows. I forgot what a fun guy Taylor is. I sure miss that crazy dancing and harmonica playin’.
Next a Jordin Sparks and Rueben Studdard duet, singing You Are All I Need to Get By. Ahhh, I love Rueben too. It’s like an American Idol reunion show. Their voices really compliment each other. Nice.
Bette Midler surprises the crowd next with Wind Beneath Your Wings. OK, I love Bet Midler but I’m not sure she could pass an American Idol audition with this performance tonight. What an odd mixture of talent tonight. Does anyone else find this just odd?
Kelly Clarkson returns to sing Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band followed by Taylor soulfully singing then Carrie Underwood and then finally Rueben Studdard singing Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds. Then this year’s top 12 finish up the Beatles musical montage with A Little Help from My Friends.
So we are finally down to the reason we are here, not that I didn’t enjoy some of the show until now. Wow, those both look gorgeous. 74 million votes last night determine that
Jordin Sparks is Season Six winner!
Blake has got a lot of class and truly looks thrilled for her.
After a somewhat surreal two hours I have to look back at Season Six and wonder if this is the beginning of the end. It seems like there has been a total lack of passion about any of the contestants this year .well, except Sanjaya. I’ve even noticed far fewer people posting comments and voting on DDN.com. Last year we had over 3,000 votes on our DDN.com polls. This year, we were lucky to reach 400. What’s he deal?
There are rumors tonight that Simon has had it and he is not returning next year. I don’t know how true that is but did you think this year was a bit lack luster too? Do you plan on watching next year?

If I remember correctly, Paula gave Melinda a standing ovation way back in semifinals, for My Funny Valentine. She also cried. MFV is appearing on a number of “best AI performance” lists, so it looks like people are agreeing with her.

Before I even get into the show, I have to address Michael: regarding your first remark - LIGHTEN UP! Kelle has taken her pure love of the show and is now providing a service to us without any compensation, but with deadlines and pressure to get the info up on the site basically immediately following the show being aired. There isn’t always time for editing right away. And she has to re-watch it at a later time to really be able to enjoy it. Ok, anyway - back to the important stuff! There were definitely good points and bad points to the show. I could certainly do without a lot of the filler - the awards for one. That’s just annoying. I could have done without Green Day and Bette Midler. I LOVED the African Children’s Choir. It was awesome to see them just beaming at the end when everyone was clapping for them. That was just priceless! I do like Kelly’s new song, but I think she has tried to separate herself too much from where she got her start. I LOVED Jordin and Reuben’s duet. He was my favorite from the beginning and Jordin has been too - so, it was great to see them together. It was fun to see Blake in his element. And he did show a lot of class when Jordin was proclaimed the winner. You can tell he was truly happy for her. They will both have success in their respective genre’s of music, no doubt about that. I will absolutely continue to watch the show. It’s not going away any time soon. I don’t think it was dull like so many people have said. I think there were some seriously talented people this year and it kept me watching! Can’t wait for next season! :)

More people may be inclined to read your words if they were not riddled with grammatical errors. As for Idol, it’s a dying breed. I like the show, but it definitely needs revision. They should let the fans vote until it gets to maybe the top 6, or let them vote when it does get to the top six. Right now, it is no longer a singing competition… it’s merely a popularity contest and not all fo the best singers make it as far as they should. I mean seriously, Fantasia won. How horrible of a singer is she?! I am happy that Jordin won though, because it was so obvious how much she wanted it, how hard she worked and just how much it meant to her to win. She is an amazing girl and I hope she handles it as well as Carrie has.

Congrats to Jordin, and good job, Blake. Jordin finally gave me a wow factor on her duet with Rueben last night - now that I would buy! I did enjoy that it was an Idol reunion last night, I guess Kelly finally decided that if that stage was good enough for Gwen Stefani and Diana Ross, that she could finally grace it with her presence as well. Fantasia was a glaring omission, but then I haven’t really seen her since her finale! Blake’s number with Doug E. Fresh was fun - THAT is Blake’s element and that is a slot he can do well in. Overall I just really didn’t enjoy the show half as much this year as I did last year. I felt that the show has turned into an hour long commercial. I thought the random guest stars were stupid - they are only there for promotion. I don’t mind the mentors singing, but there were other people thrown in there for no apparent reason. Is this a variety show, or a show to find the next American Idol???? I too enjoyed the numbers with the contestants all together, that is what they USED to do every week - on Wed. they would perform together. It gave us an even better feel of what kind of performers they are. But now the contestants are shoved aside for self-promoting acts trying to get publicity, which of course is the name of the game. It just feels like the show has lost much of its warmth. It also felt like the contestants just weren’t as good this year overall - or at least not as entertaining - they were mostly pretty boring. Sanjaya was this year’s Kellie that added interest and controversy, but the rest of them just weren’t much fun to watch for me. Last year I wouldn’t have missed it - this year I didn’t care. Taylor sure did bring an element of fun last year! I love him to pieces. And I loved Katharine, and Chris, and Elliot and Paris, and yes - even Bucky! I told the Chris fans last year that NOT winning was the best thing that could happen to him - guess I was right! :) I hear he’s an arrogant jerk though - too bad - I heard a Chicken Little interview where he said that Chris was totally aloof and unfriendly. Rocker angst I guess. And I agree, Kelle - I was thinking that Bette’s performance was pretty darn weak, and I was thinking WHAT in the world are all these people doing here? It’s just so weird. And what is up with this thing I heard that Sanjaya’s name is Bill and he just did all of this for some school project - huh??? Oh - and Simon said that he will quit after Season 10 - that by then it will be time for someone fresh to take over. I think he is counting on an awful lot, but I’m not sure I’d watch without him. Paula is an insipid mess and anyone can sit in Randy’s seat and say, yo, yo, yo dawg, check it out, check it out - it was just aw-ite for me, dawg. Whatever, dawg.

American Idol is just not what it used to be. I think the excitement has worn off for many. The season with Fantasia was the very best. I think Lakisha, Melinda, and Jordin were the power houses so they were broken up just like Jennifer, LaToya, and Fantasia. It’s honestly not a true singing contest but a poularity one based on race, looks, body size/shape, and personality. This show will end soon.

Unbelievable. 2 hours of results show and they still couldn’t make the announcement in the allotted time. Nobody who recorded the show got to see the actual announcement. After sitting through 2 hours of results show I shouldn’t have to go to the internet to find the results.

Melinda was definetly the best but I thought the whole year was great. Jordin deserved to win and I thought Brandon was the best male. I am fine with the final two and believe they both will have great carrers in their genre of music.

I loved all the entrtainers last night that came for the special. It was nice. Even though the awards was a trip it was fun to watch.Beth Midler I love and yes it sounded in the song as if she was having problems. Shes not that young anymore, but maybe she had a cold or something. Hard to say. Julie Andrews can sing but now older has some problems with voice and throat and doesn’t sing much anymore. Maybe Beth is having some of the same problems. But I give her A for effort and showing up and singing. Yeah it was shaky in a few places, but its a great song…and love to hear her sing it……..no one else sings it like she did orginally.

Congrats to Jordan winner and congratulations Blake was supper in his congratulations to Jordan. He had more respect as the runner up this year than the ones in the past years. I love the show and will watch next year. As far as Simon, gosh I hope he don’t leave the show. He and Ryan is a fun to watch and listen to. I love Randy and Paula to, but Simon and Ryan is a trip togeather. And while Simon is very critical at times he honest and down to earth and truthful. He is normally right on the money. Yeah I missed all the others. Was nice to see them altogeter. Would love to go to one of the tour shows, but gosh the price of the tickets make it almost hard for one to go…..and Sanjaya can make it. It sings the song in other lanauage very well. He is young and trianble like Jordan, and with the right help and coaching could make it. The top 12 was great and if they work hard they all can make it. Melinda all I can say is WOW>>>>>>>she can sing………love to listen to her. Love the show and will watch it next year…and now I can’t wait till tonight to watch So You Think You can Dance. That is an aswome show also…….

I agree, the fillers were a bit redundant and stupid. Bette was not in form last night, she sounded as if she were having some throat issues. Melinda once again showed us that she deserved the coveted prize. Blake was a true gentleman at the end. But these kids all have talent and will go far with the right coaching. Even Sanjaya, yes I said it. If he finds his niche. where he fits, he will do well. Like Leif Garrett or Shawn Cassidy back in the day. All the little girls love him. Like the crying girl in the audience. They all have a shot, the top 12. They have to earn it. Congrats to Jordin!

Melinda, once again tonight, proved she had it over each and every Idol contestant this year.. The gladys Knight ditty sizzled.. the gospel number was fabulous… because of her. Jordin’s voice in the Knight song.. and in the Studdard duet, just did not stand out.

Your article was right on the money! 100%. Couldn’t have said it better myself. I look for Melinda to be the Daughtry of last year— not necessarily in record sales, but in longevity of career. I miss both Chris S. and Chris R. I like Blake, but there’s nothing special about his voice— it’s his beatboxing and performing that is special. The year that Fantasia won was a lackluster year for me too. Ironic that she wasn’t there tonight. (She probably had a Broadway show, I’m thinkin’.) Good article— too tired— rambling. Nighty Night. Congrats Jordin.

Jordin will do all right, since she is only 17 and trainable. However, none of the contestants has it going on like Melinda Doolittle. She will go farther and last longer than any of the other contestants. Also, where was Fantasia tonight?
