Chris D. voting controversy brewing on ‘American Idol’

During a week when plenty of American Idol fans are outraged about favorite Chris Daughtry being eliminated there are once again rumors and accusations that there were massive voting problems Tuesday night.

The brouhaha started yesterday afternoon. My retired father began seeing reports around 3:00 p.m. on the “all news stations that one of the phone lines given for Chris actually had Kat’s voice saying “Thank you for voting for me. One fan said they just thought they had misdialed and tried again only to get the same message from Kat and finally gave up. Yet other fans reported they tried all night and could never get through on either of the Chris lines. Still others say they voted for Chris on both numbers and had no problems. Rumor has it that Chris and Kat were very close in the vote and depending on the number of calls miscounted…well, it could have been a very different outcome.

One online petition has around 16,000 names and is asking Fox for a recount.

So how would that work anyway? They couldn’t possibly quantify all the people who gave up voting on Chris’ line because they thought the vote was going to Kat. How do they deal with that; have another voting show? But could they really do that? Would that be fair? The vote would be swayed dramatically in Chris’ favor because of this mix-up and that could change things for any or all of the other three contestants.

I wonder what Chris would want. He had said that he thinks it was just voter laziness that was at fault. Everyone assumed he would be okay so they either chose not to vote or voted for someone else. Would he really want a recount after one of his favorite bands Fuel offered him the lead singer’s job last night on the TV Show Extra? Daughtry himself admits there are several offers out there already but couldn’t comment on them yet. “I’m a songwriter myself,” the 26-year-old said. “To be able to launch my own career would be a dream come true.”

My opinion, anyway you slice it, Chris Daughtry comes out a winner and that suits me, and another several million fans, just fine.

What do you think? How should they handle it if there was indeed a miscount?

If there was indeed an error?? I would love to hear a public confirmation and apology from IDOL. That’s all he would need. We already know who the STAR is.

Karen, I appreciate your comments… I tend to agree with your viewpoints on virtually all your posts! Like you, I hope Chris finds his own success. Laura, I agree about the convenience of the conspiracy allegations… why didn’t these people complain immediately? And to Teresa, respectfully, I wish that you would STOP SHOUTING WITH YOUR ALL CAPS. But hey, that’s just me. Again, I’ll state that the beauty of the blogosphere is that we are all equally represented. Your views and YOUR TONE may differ from mine, and that’s okay. I appreciate that DDN & Kelle Fraser give us the opportunity to vent our opinions. Hooray Kelle! Hooray for the fun that is American Idol!!

I find it awfully convenient that all of these allegations came out AFTER Chris got voted off. Why not the night of? Call me a cynic, but I just don’t buy it.

Well, I think all the people that think Chris is a sore loser should shut your mouth, because it was obvious that he was the best, most modern sounding artist on the show, and he deserved to win. Taylor and Elliot are good singers, but they aren’t the best, so SOME people need to try and get over that fact, this is my opinion, Chris had a right to be surprised, he is very talented and has millions of fans, hes not a sore loser, and you people that think he is are overexaggerating

Katie, I read, and then heard the actually interview, and you’re right on. He was extremely ungracious. Whatever class I thought he had, has disappeared now. No one has the right to act like this opportunity (AI) was his God given right to win. Personally, I wish him much success, but I’m no longer a fan (even though I wasn’t much of one to start with). Hopefully the three remaining contestants have been able to focus on the week ahead and will be ready to secure a spot in the finals. I’m rooting for Elliott, but I’d be just as happy for Taylor or for Kat. Chris, who?

Bryan, I assume you are speaking about my comments. All I did was quote Chris. I don’t understand how this could possibly be construed as “grossly overstating” his arrogance or sore-loserness at all. Again, other AI contestants have had unpleasant surprises in the past, and none of them have been so egotistical or off-putting. But, hey, I admit that virtually everything is open to interpretation. The terrific thing about the Blogosphere is that we can agree to disagree. You are absolutely entitled to your opinion. I stand by mine. Personally, I do not appreciate Chris’ comments. For my taste, Paris has been a wonderful role model. Regarding her ouster, she said: “I’m just so grateful to have had this opportunity to share my gift and just give my all, and give 100% every night, time after time, to just prove to you guys that I wasn’t doing it just for the goal to have the title of an American Idol, but to show you guys that I love, and this is my passion, to be a singer and an entertainer as well… and it was just my time to go.â€? Now to me that is being a gracious loser.

Many of you are grossly overstating Chris’s arrogance and sore-loserness. After an unpleasant surprise like that, who wouldn’t have a complaint or two. All things considered he’s better off not winning anyway.

There is nothing more grounding and nothing more ugly than sheer arrogance. And American made this ego maniac. Just wait to see if he gets any real success under his belt, if he acts this way now….watch out, next he’ll think he deserves to be in the hall of fame. I’m glad we found this out now, rather than later about rocker Chris. He’s no American Idol, he thinks he’s God himself!!! No thank you!

At this point of the competition, they are all winners. AI does not always guarantee future success (i.e. Reuben-who, Fantasia) If there were any voting glitches the remaining contestants shouldn’t be punished (especially Kat since she seems to be the one getting the most criticism - totally undeserved). You have to admit the girl has great talent and seems to be the most versatile. She has conducted herself with poise and grace. Definitely a “class” act. Enjoy the rest of the season and MOVE ON!

I think if it is indeed true about the phones Fox should set it straight.

More quotes from Chris on losing AI: From People: Asked why he thought he got cut, Daughtry said, “The only thing I can think of is maybe everybody just thought I was shoo-in and didn’t vote.” And from Entertainment Weekly: “There are a lot of disappointed people and fans. There was floods of mail to Fox last night and today and everyone is like, ‘What happened?’ It could be the fact that I made the biggest shock in American Idol history that works to my benefit.” PU-LEEZE.

Chris’ ugly arrogance during post-mortum interviews makes me ill. He believes he was entitled to win, and was robbed; in fact he said he assumed he would win, and was shocked at the result. He thought Ryan must have been joking! There have been many surprising AI eliminations in past seasons (Tamyra Gray, LaToya London, Jennifer Hudson…), and yet, none of those folks were such sore losers. Chris is being a total cry-baby, not even willing to speak kindly about his other competitors. This, from the Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/o2ezx), makes me angry: “When one of the Reporters Who Cover Television veered off point to ask him what he had learned over the weeks of competition about the three who are still in the running — Taylor Hicks, Elliott Yamin and Katharine McPhee — Daughtry shot back, ‘I really don’t think that’s relevant right now.’” (Of course not, Chris, it’s ALL ABOUT YOU.) After hearing his rants I have lost all love for Chris. Someone needs to tell him to learn some sportsmanship. Pwew. Go away Chris. Go sing with Fuel so I never have to see or hear you again. And to think you used to be my fav. Bleh.

There were Idol’s voices thanking people for voting? I’ve never gotten that before. But then - I tried for 2 hours to vote for Taylor and I could never get through on either of his lines, so I wouldn’t know. Chris fans weren’t the only ones that couldn’t get through - Taylor couldn’t get all of his votes either. I didn’t attempt to vote for anyone else, so that is the only line that I can speak for. dialidol apparently had less of a problem getting through, because they had the least trouble getting through on Chris’s line and predicted he would go. So do the Chris fans think that they are a pawn for AI or something, that it’s all a conspiracy to get Chris off the show? If anything - I think they have been trying to slant things in his favor. No - we don’t need a recount - there is no way to do that fairly. This was NOT Chris’s first time in the bottom - he lost - plain and simple and I don’t get why folks are so darn upset. It’s not like he’s going to disappear into the oblivion - he now has more OPTIONS than he would have had if he won. And frankly, after last night, I am more turned off by him than ever after seeing the ego he has apparently developed already - no grace in defeat there. He has lost my respect - not that he gives a rat’s patoot. And just a reminder - music is subjective, folks. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure applies here - it’s not so black and white that if YOU don’t like it - then no one else will.

Didn’t we got through this once already…Geez, it’s not a Presidential election folks, it’s an entertainment show. So Chris lost, boo hoo. One of my favorites lost weeks ago, but I didn’t cry foul. Get over the fact that Chris appears to be a sore loser. Get over the fact that Kat is still there. Get over the fact that regardless of how the system is set up, there will be human error and mechanical error. It’s an entertainment show, the purpose of which is to bring young talent to the forefront. It’s not setting world policy, it’s not saving lives, it’s not feeding the homeless or curing the sick. It’s entertainment, pure and simple. There are more important things in the world to worry about then whether or not your text message or phone call got through for a singing competition. I think I’ll sit down tonight and write a letter to my nephew over in Iraq to see how he and his buddies are doing. I’m sure they could care less about some alleged crossed wires or dropped calls for a sing contests. They have more important things to be concerned with. Enjoy AI for it’s entertainment factor. Don’t make it be the most important issue of the day!

People just need to get over it! Chris has a career ahead of him - that much is obvious. And his name will probably remain in the spotlight more now because of this stupid controversy over if he had remained and, say, come in second place. He’s not worried about his career being hurt, so all of his “die-hard” fans shouldn’t either. Everyone that says they are done with the show just crack me up. Whenever something doesn’t go the way they think it should, it must mean the show is rigged! PLEASE!
