Are you guilty of enjoying “Idol” humiliation?

I’ve recently had several people tell me they enjoy the first several weeks of Idol the most. They are drawn to the crowds of unsuspecting “singers” who make total fools of themselves on national TV. What does it say about us that we thrill at the utter self humiliation of others?

But that’s a good point. It’s self humiliation. It’s not like they haven’t seen the show; heard Simon “be honest” and tell someone they are the worst he’s ever seen.

Oh. Okay. Since they do it to themselves, it’s acceptable that we spend an hour or two, a couple times a week, actually enjoying it. I can’t help but ask myself if these Jerry Springer, Minnie Mouse voice, lingerie wearing people are naive enough to think they can be the next Kelly Clarkson, should we, or I, feel badly about gaining such entertainment pleasure from their stupidity?

So here I am, despite my ethical quandary, finding myself setting the DVR for tomorrow’s show because I wouldn’t want to miss the chance to stop and rewind a single embarrassing moment. I guess I’ll choose to take solace in the fact that thousands of others are doing exactly the same thing.

I completely agree - and enjoy the first few weeks of Idol. People have to know what they are getting themselves in to when auditioning… I continue to watch the show through the season, but my husband only watches the first several weeks ;)

Heck yeah, I am guilty! Some of those people are hilarious! Most of the time you wonder if they do it just to get on TV, or if they really don’t have a clue. At the same time, it’s very enjoyable to see the genuine excitement people have when they make it through. Like the girl last night who sang the Billie Holiday song. Geez, was she incredible! Then she left the audition room and could barely stand up. That was really fun to watch.

The show makes me laugh… I ordinarily don’t like comedies, but some of these competitors that are trying out to be the American Idol are insanely funny!

I do not like seeing and hearing the foul mouthed people on the Idol show as fill-ins. I am so disgusted with all the ones who use that kind of language and they should not be aired at all. This show is on TV at a time when families could enjoy watching and it is not right that the show has sunk to such a low place. We need more auditions aired. What about putting on just a part of the singing of the ones that the judges okayed to go on. After all that is what the show is all about. I will wait until the people are chosen before I start watching the Idol again. Richard

I am guilty. While I enjoy the really good singers, I absolutely can’t wait for the ones that are so terrible they get a reaction from Simon.

pshaw! i am a glutton for american idol! everybody and their mom loves to watch american idol for the first few weeks of auditions! i was at the kettering rec last night, about to go home and had to stop to catch a haphazard audition from the tv in the lobby. i went home and was happy to see that it was playing for another hour! i can’t get enough of aweful auditions, i wish they would play them all year long!
