The Season 9 “American Idol” Top 12, revealed Thursday, is mostly predictable, but there were a few shockers.
Here is the Top 12 in no particular order:
Didi Benami
Siobhan Magnus
Paige Miles
Casey James
Tim Urban
Lee Dewyse
Crystal Bowersox
Big Mike Lynche
Lacey Brown
Aaron Kelly
Andrew Garcia
Katie Stevens
This means farewell to
Katelyn Epperly, who had a couple really strong performances with “Oh Darling” by The Beatles and Coldplay’s , but who made a really big mistake choosing Carole King’s “I Feel The Earth Move.” I will miss her crazy curly hair.
Todrick Hall, the singer/dancer who once performed with “American Idol” Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino. He was the only contestant who has truly brought song and dance together on stage this season and actually, pretty much every season. Some people tried to dance but just did it badly.
Alex Lambert, who has a lot of potential, a strong voice and a mullet. I actually feel bad now for all my mullet cracks after his emotional farewell speech and performance. His heart was broken, and he apologized for his lack of confidence on stage. It must be so hard to go home so close to the next big step.
Lilly Scott, who was definitely the biggest shock of the night. Lilly had been consistently among the top performers and definitely had Top Four potential. Was it her Patsy Cline song choice last night? Maybe America couldn’t handle two non-mainstream artists this season (Lilly and Crystal)?
Who is lucky and needs to step up:
Paige Miles, whom Simon says has one of the best voices of all of the contestants but who hasn’t picked a song to showcase it yet)
Tim Urban, who must have some serious fans out there this season or someone is trying to sabotage this competition. Tim didn’t even make the original Top 24 (he was a late replacement for ineligible contestant Chris Golightly) and now he’s in the Top 12. What??? He certainly gets the most-improved award, but he’s not Top 12 material. I really hope he’s not the next Sanjaya though he does have awful hair. He deserved to go home, not Alex Lambert.
Lacey Brown, who has just been really inconsistent. She has a great look and is just really likable. She had a strong performance this week, which carried her through, but she’s also had some really weak ones.
Andrew Garcia, who wowed the judges and America with his acoustic version of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” during Hollywood Week, but who has struggled with song choice since. Even with a bad song choice, you can still see his originality, but if he hopes to be a real contender against some strong competition, he has got to pick the right songs. I’m glad he’ll be sticking around longer. He was one of very few people I remember from the auditions. That says something.
Katie Stevens, the sweet 17-year-old with a huge voice and huge potential but who also has really struggled with song choice. You could tell even Katie was shocked she made it over Lilly Scott.
Off topic but
While I’m thinking of it, what is up with Simon and Kara this season? The constant flirting (or whatever it is) is starting to creep me out almost as much as Ellen running up on stage Wednesday night to hug Tim Urban. His performance wasn’t that good
After the Top 8 guys took to the stage tonight, one stood head and shoulders above the rest — literally and figuratively — and that’s Mike Lynche. His performance of “A Woman’s Work” by Maxwell was recording quality and Mike is certainly comfortable on stage.
I’d hate to go out on a limb, but he and Crystal Bowersox, the “leading lady” so far this season, could very well be the Final Two.
Who’s in jeopardy after tonight? As much as it pains me to admit, I think one of my early favorites could be in danger of going home. Andrew Garcia, who really stood out as a unique artist during the auditions and who wowed the judges with his rendition of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” during Hollywood Week, has struggled to find his footing the last three weeks.
I hope America gives him another chance and that Andrew can find the right songs to show what a unique artist he could be.
Who could also be going home? I think Alex Lambert (despite many high marks from judges and a unique voice) just lacks star quality. I think Tim Urban, despite a decent showing tonight, has had some really poor performances that are hard to look past — and they weren’t weak just because they were the wrong song choices … they were weak vocally.
Todrick Hall, who I thought was in serious trouble going into tonight’s competition, may have saved himself with the second-best performance of the night.
Here’s a recap of tonight’s performances:
Lee Dewyse
Song choice: “Fireflies” by Owl City while playing guitar
Vocals: Mediocre
Judges’ comments: Randy said it was an odd song choice, and despite a few pitch problems, it worked. Kara said Lee’s interpretation of the song was better than the original and while it wasn’t his best, it was solid. Simon said there was nothing to rave about, and that Lee is better than that song.
Overall impression: It wasn’t as memorable as some of Lee’s previous performances, but it should be enough to land Lee in the Top 12. I still think Lee will go far in this competition, but hopefully he’ll deliver some more impactful performances like he did in previous weeks. He’s the real rocker on the show this season.
Grade: B
Alex Lambert
Song choice: “Trouble” by Ray LaMontagne with guitar
Vocals: Strong
Judges’ comments: Randy said it was a good song choice, but there was no wow factor. Ellen said he gets better every week, but needs to gain confidence. Kara said the only thing standing in the way is himself because he’s stiff and not in the moment. Simon said he is mentally in the wrong place to the point he’s not relaxed or having a good time. Simon suggested imagining Randy in a bikini. I’m not so sure about that one.
Overall impression: Anyone have any scissors? I don’t think I’ll ever get past that mullet. But seriously, I’m not wowed by Alex. Maybe it’s the mullet, or maybe it’s just the lack of star power.
Grade: B
Tim Urban
Song choice: “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen
Vocals: Good
Judges’ comments: Randy said Tim walked in some pretty big shoes with that song choice (Jason Castro) and did pretty well. Ellen was so impressed she ran and gave him a hug. Kara said she thought he’d be going home but now he’s in it. Simon said that was a smart song choice, and his strongest performance so far.
Overall impression: I hate to admit it, but that performance was pretty good. I haven’t been a big Tim Urban fan. I thought he should have been sent home two weeks ago, but I can be persuaded otherwise. He’s certainly a contender for “most improved.”
Grade: B+
Andrew Garcia
Song choice: “Genie in a Bottle” by Christina Aguilera
Vocals: Mediocre
Judges’ comments: Randy said it was an interesting song choice but that it didn’t quite work because it didn’t have range. Ellen thought it was a great song choice though she wished he would have done more with it. Kara said Andrew has struggled since peaking so early, and that the performance just wasn’t great. Simon said it came across a little desperate and uncomfortable.
Overall impression: Poor Andrew will never live up to his Hollywood Week “Straight Up” performance. I still really like him and want to see him succeed, but he set the bar pretty high. I thought tonight’s performance was fun and at least showcased the fact that Andrew could be such a fun recording artist. I was excited that he was singing a little Xtina, but it just didn’t live up to Paula. Sigh …
Grade: B-
Casey James
Song choice: “You’ll Think of Me” by Keith Urban with guitar
Vocals: Strong
Judges’ comments: Randy said it was a safe choice and that he should go for more intensity. Ellen disagreed and thought it was great and that it felt comfortable. Kara said this was better than last week and much more honest but that a spark is still missing. Simon said it was his second best and that it made him sincere, but not something anyone will be raving about in 24 hours.
Overall impression: Casey will be around for weeks to come. This wasn’t his best effort, but he’s done more than enough to attract a loyal following — heck, probably based on looks alone. Well, it’s true.
Grade: B
Aaron Kelly
Song choice: “I’m Already There” by Lonestar
Vocals: Strong
Judges’ comments: Randy said the performance was really good, despite a slow start. Ellen said that Aaron has confidence beyond his years, but thought the song choice wasn’t terrific. Kara said Aaron’s a contender, but that the song choice wasn’t relevant to his life. Simon said that was “rubbish” and that it was the right type of song for Aaron, and it had emotion despite not being his strongest vocal performance.
Overall impression: Aaron is very likable and has a sound that meshes well with country music. He has a lot of talent for such a young age, and I think that alone will carry him pretty far in this competition. I thought it was a really strong vocal performance.
Grade: A-
Todrick Hall
Song choice: “Somebody to Love” by Queen
Vocals: Really strong
Judges’ comments: Randy said Todrick proved he could sing and why he deserves to be here. Ellen said it really worked like a gospel song. Kara said it was very dramatic at moments, but the singing was really good. Simon said it was good in parts and what he did tonight is prove he is a Broadway singer, not a recording artist. “It was a good song choice, and it may have saved you,” he said.
Overall impression: Todrick is a performer. He has really struggled with song choice and overdoing it the last two weeks, but I think this week he did make an impression. And yes, it was sort of like Broadway and “Glee,” and that’s why I really liked it. It’s the first time of the night the audience was up on their feet having a good time. The earlier performances of the evening were, well, sort of bland. Isn’t energizing the crowd part of what recording should be all about?
Grade: A-
Michael Lynche
Song choice: “This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell
Vocals: Amazing
Judges’ comments: Randy said it was “dope” and “hot.” Ellen said Big Mike is the one to beat now. Kara was moved to tears by the relevance of the song to his life. Simon said a performance like that was so needed tonight, and that Mike came out with a hard song and “100 percent nailed it.” It was the best performance of the season, Simon added.
Overall impression: While it was a little overly dramatic, it was an incredible performance.
Who should go home based on tonight’s performances? It’s a toss-up between Paige Miles, Katie Stevens, Katelyn Epperly and Lacey Brown.
But I think there are good arguments for any one of these eight remaining ladies making the Top 12.
Here’s tonight’s play by play:
Katie Stevens
Song: Kelly Clarkson’s “Break Away”
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Randy compared the performance to karaoke. Ellen commended Katie for her song choice but lacked feeling. Kara said this year we have people who know who they are and others don’t. “The singing needed to be perfect tonight, and it wasn’t.” Simon said Katie’s issue is that she hasn’t worked out what kind of artist she wants to be and that the performance was “gloomy,” but commended her for taking the artists’ advice.
Overall impression: Katie’s a talented singer, but this performance lacked the “wow” factor it needed to earn a spot in the Top 12. She also doesn’t have any standout performances from past weeks.
Grade: C+
Why she could be Top-12 worthy: She hasn’t really found herself on stage yet, but she is very likable, has a strong voice and could attract the youth vote.
Siobhan Magnus
Song: “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals
Vocals: Strong
Judges comments: Randy commended Siobhan for surprising them and knows how to take risks. Ellen said she’s why she loves music and that the performance was captivating and current. Kara said Siobhan is so unique and for an “unlikely character” on the show, she’s doing great. Simon wasn’t a fan and thought the performance and outfit were weird and dark.
Overall impression: I thought it was a good showcase of her vocal range, though sort of dark. I imagine her performance from last week will carry her through.
Grade: B
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: Siobhan, while she is no Adam Lambert, has the guts to take some big risks on stage some work, some don’t. But she keeps you guessing, and that’s a good thing on a show like this.
Lacey Brown
Song: Brandy Carlisle’s “The Story”
Vocals: Unusual, but good
Judges comments: Randy and Ellen agreed that was Lacey’s best performance so far and showcased her distinctive voice. Kara said it was a “brilliant choice” and she’s back. Simon said he didn’t love the song, but she sang it really well, but it’s in danger of being forgotten.
Overall impression: I think Lacey has improved from the last couple performances, which were very dull, but I’m not sure her best performance will stand up against the competition.
Grade: B
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: There’s something captivating about Lacey. Maybe it’s her look, her personality or her stage presence. She has been inconsistent, so I guess it’s a question of whether people will remember good Lacey or bad Lacey.
Katelyn Epperly
Song: Carole King’s “I Feel the Earth Move” with keyboard
Vocals: Strong
Judges comments: Randy said he didn’t feel the right connection, and that there was “nothing special” about it. Ellen said she didn’t know if that was the song that would have wowed people and that it just wasn’t enough. Kara said she wasn’t connected like last week and the song was simple for such an important night. Simon said “it was kind of like request night on a Friday night at a restaurant.” “This may have been a mistake for you tonight.”
Overall impression: This wasn’t Katelyn’s best performance can’t argue with the judges on that one. But I think she has been one of the strongest in past week’s and hopefully that will be enough to keep her around.
Grade: C+
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: Tonight wasn’t her best, but over the last few weeks, Katelyn has been one of the top performers. She has a great voice and a great look (fabulous curly hair).
Didi Benami
Song: Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon”
Vocals: Strong with guitar
Judges comments: Randy said it was much better than last week but that there wasn’t a “wow” moment. Ellen said that it was a lovely performance and she rebounded nicely from last week’s disappointing one. Kara said this performance was one of her favorite moments of the season. Simon said he agreed with Kara and that it was “head and shoulders above the rest” so far and that the whole performance was a “wow moment.”
Overall impression: I think Didi proved she should stick around. She has a really interesting sound. This was much better than previous performances.
Grade: B+
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: She has a really unique sound. Tonight, she chose a song that proved that.
Paige Miles
Song: “Smile” by Charlie Chaplin
Vocals: Mediocre
Judges comments: Randy said the song was way too big for Paige and “just didn’t work at all.” Ellen said the song is supposed to be uplifting, but it was sad. Kara said “it was all wrong” and tonight was not the night to do that. Simon said it was a horrible song choice and that the arrangement was awful and something you’d hear in the Holiday Inn in 1974. “It’s such a shame, you had so much potential you have no idea what kind of artist you want to be.”
Overall impression: That was really depressing and it did not show off Paige’s vocal range. I think Paige could be in danger of coming home because she doesn’t have any performances that really stand out among the rest of the talent.
Grade: C-
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: Week after week, the judges have criticized Paige for song choice, but always build her back up saying she has one of the best voices in the competition. People may keep her around based on that alone.
Crystal Bowersox
Song: “Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman with electric guitar
Vocals: Wow
Judges comments: “This is what the show’s about love the honesty,” Randy said. Ellen said she needs new adjectives for Crystal. Kara said it’s easy for you because you know who you are and what you’ll do. Simon said you are one million billion percent in the Top 12 next week and definitely the most improved. “You’ve got confidence, and it’s yours to lose.”
Overall impression: Love her. She really is the female to beat.
Grade: A
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: If she’s not in the Top 12, heck, even the Top 2, there is something very wrong with this competition.
Lilly Scott
Song: Patsy Cline’s “I Fall to Pieces” with mandolin
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Randy and Ellen loved the voice and originality. Kara said it was very contemporary. Simon said “I think you’re very brave choosing the song on a night like this. It was cute and quirky but that could have been risky.”
Overall impression: This seemed like a really odd song choice for Lilly. I’m still scratching my head. It was a good performance, but she took a step backward this week in my book.
Grade: B
Why she could be Top 12 worthy: Minus tonight’s risky song choice, Lilly has consistently been one of the best and has the advantage of knowing what kind of artist she wants to be.
Now it’s your turn: Who’s on your Top 6 ladies list?
Goodbye John Park, Jermaine Sellers, Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn.
Did America get it right this week?
Half right. Half wrong.
How has Tim Urban managed to survive the last two rounds? He’s not good, and he didn’t even make the original Top 24 (he was a last-minute substitution for an ineligible contestant). Let’s hope he doesn’t stick around undeservingly as long as Sanjaya did a few seasons back.
Urban was better this week than last, but compared to the other contestants — including the two guys who went home tonight — he’s not even in the same league.
John Park unfortunately made the mistake of choosing the wrong songs despite having a really nice voice. Jermaine Sellers clouded his natural talents with way too many vocal tricks the last two weeks. Jermaine, I’ll really miss your fun sense of fashion. And John, there’s always Shania.
As for the ladies, Michelle Delamor should not have went home over Lacey Brown. But ultimately, neither are Top 12 worthy, so what’s one more week in the great scheme of things? America got it right with Haeley Vaughn, but the good news is she’s young and will have plenty of opportunities to come. Her final performance was really sad to watch. Poor girl. Imagine going through that disappointment in such a public way at such a young age.
Now, on a happier note, it’s prediction time. Here’s my Top 12 wish list in no particular order:
Crystal Bowersox
Lilly Scott
Katie Stevens
Katelyn Epperly
Paige Miles
Siobhan Magnus (she’ll keep us guessing)
Andrew Garcia
Michael Lynche
Lee Dewyse
Aaron Kelly
Casey James
Alex Lambert
I wish it didn’t have to be an even amount of boys and girls. I’d take Didi Benami over Alex “not Adam” Lambert any day.
So far, I think the ladies are leading the race to “American Idol” fame. A few of the male performances stood out last night (Michael Lynche and Lee Dewyse and Andrew Garcia has it in him), but the ladies were a bigger hit this week. Guys, you better step it up.
After tonight’s performances
Who should definitely stay? Ohio’s Crystal Bowersox, Katelyn Epperly, Lilly Scott, Siobhan Magnus
Who should definitely go? Haeley Vaughn, Lacey Brown
Who deserves a get out of jail free card? Katie Stevens, Didi Benami
Here’s tonight’s play-by-play:
Crystal Bowersox
Song: “Long as I Can See the Light” by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Vocals: Excellent
Judges comments: Randy said Crystal is the “truth”; she is not trying to be anybody else. Oh yes, and this season’s first: “That girl is hot!” Ellen said that performance was pure, raw natural talent and “amazing.” Kara said Crystal completely recovered from last week’s wrong song choice (Alanis Morrissette’s “Hand in My Pocket, although Kara wrongly said it was “You Outta Know”). Simon said that he completely “misunderestimated” (is that a word, Simon?) Crystal from last week. “This was the moment we realized with Kelly Clarkson that we had a serious artist,” he said.
Overall impression: Wow. Crystal is just amazing. It’s not necessarily my favorite type of music, but when she takes to the stage, I’m captivated. She has a powerful voice and is just so genuine. She really connects with her audience. She could very well win this competition.
Grade: A
Haeley Vaughn
Song: “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus
Vocals: Not good
Judges comments: Randy said “it was excruciating” and that Haeley had no connection to the song. Ellen said she shouldn’t stop smiling, but agreed it lacked emotion. Kara said a lot of people are rooting for Haeley and that she’s a really good performer, but that she needs to work on her vocals. Simon said it was “a complete and utter mess” and that it was ironic she was singing about climbing when she just fell.
Overall impression: Crystal is a tough act to follow. Haeley seems to have a loyal following, is incredibly likable and could really gain a fan base as a black country artist (her goal), but her vocals just don’t stand up to the competition. Her fan following may save her this week, though.
Grade: D+ (bonus points for the bright smile)
Lacey Brown
Song: “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Randy said he thought it was a good song choice but that it was very karaoke and lacked a special quality. Ellen disagreed and said it was “adorable” and a good song choice. Kara, who suggested the song choice last week, said the song showcased what was good about her voice and her personality but that she didn’t push it enough. Simon said it was marginally better than last week but that it wasn’t memorable enough.
Overall impression: It was a fun performance, and Lacey’s personality really shined through. I’m sure it was enough to carry her through to next week, but I don’t think she’s a real contender in this competition.
Grade: C+
Katie Stevens
Song: “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Randy said there were some bright moments, but she needs to look for songs that are bigger. Ellen said Katie has a great voice but that she needs to hear songs even younger and hipper. Kara said she’s frustrated because she sees so much potential in her and that she really started opening up toward the end of the song and that she needs to pick songs that have more impact. Simon said it’s frustrating because she made an attempt to be younger, but his issue is that she needs to tell the audience what kind of artist she wants to be.
Overall impression: Katie is struggling with song choice, but has a really good voice. I hope she can find her identity in this competition because if she does, she could go very far. Katie, only 17, is one of those people you really want to see succeed.
Grade: B-
Didi Benami
Song: “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Randy said deep-routed soul didn’t really work for Didi’s voice. Ellen said she loves Didi’s voice and had a great stage presence and energy, but that the song choice was off. Kara said it wasn’t good and that she should stick with her identity and that “we lost the uniqueness of your voice and vocal stylings that got you to this point.” Simon said the song was screechy and all over the place and that it’s frustrating because it was a wasted opportunity.
Overall impression: Didi was one of the more unique contestants during Hollywood Week and really set herself apart from the others with performances, including a Kara DioGuardi song, but the last two weeks, like Katie, Didi’s struggled to make the right choices. But Didi has a great voice, and I think her past performances will carry her through.
Grade: B-
Michelle Delamor
Song: “With Arms Wide Open” by Creed
Vocals: Strong
Judges comments: Randy said she didn’t do enough with the song. Ellen said she did do a lot with the song and it made her forget it was a rock song, however there were a few pitch problems. “It almost worked,” Ellen said. Kara disagreed and said it was her favorite performance of Michelle’s ever and that it was believable, despite a few imperfections. Simon agreed and said the first half was stronger than the second half and got about it 80 percent right.
Overall impression: Michelle has a lovely voice. This performance was middle-of-the-road, but certainly enough to keep her around.
Grade: B
Lilly Scott
Song: “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke
Vocals: Strong
Judges comments: Randy said Lilly is unique and that it was his favorite of the night so far. Ellen says Lilly has “it.” Kara said Lilly had her first “moment” in the competition and that she is going to change the game. Simon said it was good but wasn’t as crazy about it but that Crystal was stronger.
Overall impression: Lilly knows her identity. That will carry her far in this competition. I agreed with Simon in that I thought Crystal was just a step in front of her and was more captivating, but Lilly could make this competition interesting.
Grade: A-
Katelyn Epperly
Song: “The Scientist” by Coldplay
Vocals: Excellent
Judges comments: Randy said he really liked it, despite a few pitch problems at the end. Ellen said it was way too slow. Kara said “I kind of love you,” but you’re all over the place, but she’s really good. She said Katelyn needs to figure out who she is quick. Simon said it was a smart song choice, but she needs to work on being less corny and that she “may have put herself back in the race.”
Overall impression: I was scratching my head when Katelyn announced she would sing Coldplay, but I was really taken by surprise in a good way. Yes, a little slow, but I loved it.
Grade: A-
Paige Miles
Song: “Walk Away” by Kelly Clarkson
Vocals: Excellent she can hit those high notes
Judges comments: Randy said he liked it, although the song didn’t showcase her big voice and her vocal range. Ellen said she changed just the right amount and brought energy and fun to the performance. Kara said she didn’t connect with the meaning of the song, meaning she was way happier than the song. Simon said he agreed with Randy in that it wasn’t the right song choice for her voice and was forgettable.
Overall impression: Definitely in the upper-half of tonight’s performances. I agree the song didn’t show off her talents. I want to hear more of this great voice the judges keep talking about to know if she really does have the best vocals.
Grade: B+
Siobhan Magnus
Song: “Think” by Aretha Franklin
Vocals: Good the last note was impressive, but she was inconsistent throughout the song
Judges comments: Randy said Siobhan picked the greatest singer (a huge risk) and slayed it. Ellen said you shouldn’t normally take on such a big song, but that it was excellent. Kara said the high note was amazing. Simon said it was part good and part bad, but that overall she is very talented.
Overall impression: Siobhan is another one to watch. She’s a contestant who will always keep you guessing, which can be a really good thing. But man, this chick is weird.
Grade: B+
Now it’s your turn: What did you think of tonight’s performances? Any bets on who might win or at least make the final four?
The Top 10 guys took to the stage tonight in a surprise twist as contestant Crystal Bowersox, from Ohio, was taken to the hospital earlier today, and was not allowed to perform under doctor’s orders, forcing “American Idol” producers to switch this week’s schedule. US Weekly is reporting Crystal suffered from diabetes complications.
As for the guys, well, I just don’t know what to think. They still have a lot to prove. Most seasons you can tell early on who’s going to make it to the finals or at least the final four. This season, I’m not so sure. Some early favorites have been disappointing so far, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed they’ll snap to it. Others seemingly have come out of nowhere and consistently impress. It should be an interesting road to the top.
Who should definitely stay based on tonight’s performances? Michael Lynche and Lee Dewyse
Who should go based on tonight’s performances? Jermaine Sellers and Todrick Hall, but possibly John Park because he just wasn’t memorable at all.
Who deserves a get out of jail free card? Andrew Garcia, Casey James and Aaron Kelley — we’ve seen what they can bring despite mediocre performances tonight.
Tonight’s theme was Billboard hits, and here’s how the guys stood up against these hits:
Michael Lynche
Song: “This is a Man’s World” by James Brown
Vocals: Strong
Stage presence: Strong
Judges comments: Randy said Big Mike is an R&B star. Ellen loved the song choice. Kara said tonight Mike went from a singer to potentially a great star. Simon said he went from “pussycat to lion” in one week and that the song choice was the perfect and his best performance so far.
Overall impression: Big Mike really redeemed himself after last week’s lackluster performance of “This Love” by Maroon 5 and showed us why he deserves to be here — he’s a natural-born performer.
Grade: A-
John Park
Song: “Gravity” by John Mayer
Vocals: Strong
Stage presence: Weak
Judges comments: Randy said he didn’t bring anything new or spicy to the performance and that it just wasn’t special. Ellen said it was the right song choice, but that it didn’t have enough emotion. Kara said it was way better than last week’s performance (“God Bless the Child” by Billie Holiday), but that he lacks a connection with the audience. She said he is a little bit safe and needs to take some risks in order to advance. Simon said he thinks Purple Haze may get their lead singer back and that it didn’t feel authentic. Although better than last week, Simon said it was a forgettable performance.
Overall impression: The judges were right on target with this one. Way better than last week’s snorer. I still really like John and want to see him stick around. He just needs to get more comfortable on that stage and, like the judges said, be willing to take some risks and show us what kind of artist he could be.
Grade: C
Casey James
Song: “I Don’t Wanna Be” by Gavin DeGraw
Vocals: So-So
Stage presence: Strong, though a little too guitar-focused
Judges comments: Randy said this is the kind of music he could see Casey recording as an artist. Ellen felt like everything was on paper, but that he needs to work on his performing skills. Kara (a huge Casey fan if you haven’t been watching) said he took two steps backward tonight, but that she’s still a fan. Simon said he agrees with Kara because tonight Casey “turned into somebody you’d see in any bar across America trying to be a rock star.”
Overall impression: Casey is certainly not the best singer in this competition, but he is a strong performer with a very commercial look — and therefore has some star potential. I think he’ll be around for awhile. Tonight, I think it was too much showing off with the guitar and not enough emphasis on singing.
Grade: B-
Alex Lambert
Song: “Everybody Knows” by John Legend
Vocals: Mediocre (really butchered that last note)
Stage presence: Mediocre, lacked confidence.
Judges comments: Randy said it was much better than last week and that he was much better with the guitar. Ellen said the “unripe banana” has ripened and that he has a unique style. Kara said everyone is rooting for Alex and that he has a very recordable voice. Simon said it was a million times better than last week and that he doesn’t seem to be in it to win it and that he needs to believe in himself.
Overall impression: I thought Alex should have went home last week, but America gave him another chance. I wasn’t as impressed as the judges were tonight, but he certainly was better than last week’s awful performance of “What a Wonderful World” by James Morrison and many of tonight’s other performers. Maybe it was just me, but I cringed during that last note.
Grade: B-
Todrick Hall
Song: “What’s Love” by Tina Turner
Vocals: Solid
Stage presence: Mediocre a little boring this week
Judges comments: Randy said Todrick is great, but is changing the arrangements too much. Ellen said he should sing and move and play to his strengths and didn’t think it was the right song choice. Kara agreed. Simon was pretty harsh: “move but don’t sing,” and compared it to a theme-park performance.
Overall impression: I don’t agree with Simon’s theme-park comment, but that performance just didn’t work. It lacked energy, which is what Todrick does best, and the arrangement was too weird. Todrick wants to be an artist who sings and dances, and he should play to that strength and really show himself as a performer. It’s definitely in him.
Grade: C-
Jermaine Sellers
Song: “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye
Vocals: Good, but overdone
Stage presence: Strong.
Judges comments: Randy said it was definitely better than last week’s performance of “Get Here” by Oleta Adams and had some bright moments, but wasn’t great overall. Ellen complimented Jermaine’s style, but said that the performance just didn’t work. Kara said he is hitting some great notes, but that it’s too overdone and that he needs to focus on the meaning of the song. Simon said he’s frustrated because Jermaine waters down the songs by adding in so many vocal tricks and comes across as old-fashioned.
Overall impression: It’s hard to disagree with the judges on this one.
Grade: C-
Andrew Garcia
Song: “You Give Me Something” by James Morrison
Vocals: Strong
Stage presence: Good
Judges comments: Randy said it was pitchy and that Andrew is way better than that. He also urged Andrew to be more quirky. Ellen said there were a few pitch problems, but the real problem was that he set the bar so high with his Hollywood Week performance of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up.” Kara agreed that since that performance, it’s been going downhill and that he’s a rhythmic singer and should stick with songs that showcase that. Simon said it is frustrating that Andrew hasn’t picked the right song in two weeks and that Andrew is better than “OK.”
Overall impression: C’mon Andrew. I’m rooting for you. I do think it will be hard to live up to “Straight Up,” because that performance was so fun and so unexpected. But he has to at least try. Andrew has a really captivating voice, but he’s playing it way too safe.
Grade: B-
Aaron Kelley
Song: “My Girl” by the Temptations
Vocals: Good
Stage presence: Strong and more confident
Judges comments: Randy and Ellen commended Aaron’s confidence and the song showed off his vocals, but maybe wasn’t the best fit. Kara said she liked the performance and that he’s consistent. Simon said he didn’t like the song and that it was all over the place and that he needs to decide what kind of artist he wants to be and that the arrangement was too old-fashioned.
Overall impression: I didn’t think Aaron’s performance was as strong as last week’s performance of “Here Comes Goodbye” by Rascal Flatts, but that he managed to prove with his country twist on the song that he has a strong voice and deserves to stick around.
Grade: B
Tim Urban
Song: “Come on Get Higher” by Matt Nathanson
Vocals: So-so
Stage presence: So-so
Judges comments: Randy said it was very karaoke and that nothing jumped out. Ellen said he should act and would be great for a show like “Glee,” but that singing is not his strong suit. Kara liked the song choice but said that he didn’t make it his own. Simon said it was a big improvement from last week and that he listened to the criticism and was more relevant tonight than some of the other singers.
Overall impression: Certainly better than last week’s simply awful rendition of “Apologize,” by OneRepublic, but I still think Tim doesn’t have what it takes to last in this competition, vocally and as a performer. He just can’t measure up to some of his competitors.
Grade: C
Lee Dewyze
Song: “Lips of an Angel” by Hinder
Vocals: Strong
Stage presence: Lee was a little nervous without his guitar
Judges comments: Randy said he’s a huge fan and liked the performance despite a couple pitch problems. Ellen said there was so much passion and intensity in that performance. Kara said he thought it was better than last week, and that she could hear him on the radio right now. Simon said vocally he is head and shoulders above everyone else on this side of the competition and that he needs to gain confidence on stage, fast. “You may be the one to beat,” Simon said.
Overall impression: Finally! A memorable performance. Lee is definitely the dark horse in this competition. We saw little of him up until the live shows and now he seems to be one of a few who are really in it to win it and who knows what kind of artist he wants to be.
Grade: B+
Do you see any finalists in this lineup? Who do you like so far in this competition?
Up next: The ladies take the stage Wednesday night at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
Dreams of winning the ninth “American Idol” title ended tonight for two ladies and two gentlemen — Janell Wheeler (“What About Love,” Heart), Ashley Rodriguez (“Happy” by Leona Lewis), Joe Munoz (“You and I Both,” Jason Mraz) and Tyler “70s guy” Grady (“American Woman”).
Obviously, America’s vote wasn’t based on this week’s performances alone or the judges’ commentary, or else Tim Urban, Haeley Vaughn, Lacey Brown and Alex Lambert should have been sent home. Some of their more memorable audition and Hollywood Week performances obviously carried them through to next week. If you recall, Tim Urban wasn’t even in the original Top 24, and had some real issues hitting notes during Wednesday night’s competition.
But, the four who did go home all had lackluster performances and probably wouldn’t have made it to the Top 12 anyway.
Did you get it right? Nope. Not even one. In our fun, completely unscientific poll, you told us that Haeley Vaughn, Lacey Brown, Tim Urban and Alex Lambert should have packed their bags. Hey, I think you got it right, at least.
Media Curves, a site that conducts communications research, polled 4,154 “American Idol” viewers on the Top 12 women and men. The survey predicted Rodriguez, Vaughn, Jermaine Sellers and Todrick Hall would go home. Hey, one out of four ain’t bad.
Next week, America will vote off two more ladies and two more guys, with episodes airing Tuesday (girls) and Wednesday (guys), followed by results on Thursday — all beginning at 8 p.m. EST.
Tell us what you think about the Top 20: who deserves and doesn’t deserve to be there?
I’m not sure if Simon’s right that a woman is destined to win Season 9 of “American Idol.” The guys could give the ladies a run for their money this season. Tonight’s performances from the Top 12 guys started off pretty rough, but at least five of the guys demonstrated they’re in it to win it.
When it comes to both genders, there are a handful of early standouts at this early stage of the competition. Here’s how the guys rated.
Who deserves to stay? Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Lee Dewyze, Andrew Garcia, Michael Lynche
Who should go? Tim Urban (not quite sure why he got a second chance) and Alex Lambert (the vocals weren’t strong enough to overpower the complete lack of confidence and stage presence).
Here’s a look at the Top 12 guys’ performances:
Todrick Hall
Song choice: “Since You’ve Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson
Vocals: So-so
Judges comments: Ellen liked the fact he took a chance and put a unique twist on the song, but said the singing was not the greatest. Randy wasn’t a fan of Todrick’s completely different version of the song. Kara agreed with Randy, but loved that he took a risk. Simon said Todrick came across as a dancer who was trying to sing instead of a singer trying to dance. Simon then went on to say that Todrick “murdered” the original song and that the whole performance “verged on stupid.” Tell us how you really feel, Simon.
Overall impression: I didn’t care much for his version of the song, but he’s certainly a performer.
Grade: C+
Aaron Kelly
Song choice: “Here Comes Goodbye” by Rascal Flatts
Vocals: Strong
Judges comments: Simon said the performance was really good, but Aaron lacked confidence. Kara said she likes Aaron as a country artist. Randy said despite a few pitchy moments, it was a great performance. Ellen urged Aaron to gain confidence without losing himself.
Overall impression: The 16-year-old has a powerful voice and will probably have a strong fan base among the young girls, at least.
Grade: B
Jermaine Sellers
Song choice: “Get Here” by Oleta Adams
Vocals: Great vocal range, but a few bad notes
Judges comments: Ellen loved Jermaine’s look, but felt like the performance was a little over the top. Randy felt like it was an odd song choice and that Jermaine tried to make too much out of it. Kara said he showed range, but that range lacked meaning it was just for the sake of showing range. Simon said this was the type of song you’d hear in a cocktail bar and that the performance was way over the top and that he totally blew his opportunity. Ellen and Kara disagreed.
Overall impression: Not the best Jermaine has to offer, but hopefully his past performances will carry him through. The talent is there; he just tried waaaaayyyy too hard tonight.
Grade: C
Tim Urban
Song choice: “Apologize” by OneRepublic
Vocals: Not so good, especially the falsetto notes
Judges comments: Simon congratulated Tim for coming back (he was a last-minute addition to the Top 24), but said the judges were right the first time when they didn’t put him through. Simon also said his voice isn’t good enough for this competition. Kara said the music “swallowed” him tonight, but that Tim is current and likable. Randy and Ellen agreed it was absolutely the wrong song choice, and Ellen also said that if he sticks around, he can’t just rest on his good looks to carry him through. Picking the right song is crucial.
Overall impression: This last-minute addition to the Top 24 proved tonight why he didn’t make the first cut. He really struggled to hit the notes. If America keeps Tim around for whatever reason, he has a lot to prove.
Grade: D
Joe Munoz
Song choice: “You and I Both” by Jason Mraz
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Ellen said Joe had great stage presence. Randy said not the best song choice, but that he has a great voice. Kara liked the song choice, despite a few issues. Simon said it was an OK, safe, forgettable performance.
Overall impression: I like Joe’s voice, but I have to agree with the judges that the performance was pretty mediocre.
Overall impression: I wasn’t wowed by any means. It was another so-so performance. The song didn’t really show what he’s capable vocally. I don’t think it was a strong enough first-impression with the voters.
Grade: C
Lee Dewyze
Song choice: “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol, playing guitar
Vocals: Pretty good, despite a few bad notes
Judges comments: Ellen thought it was a good song choice, despite a few screamy moments, but that he should definitely stay. Randy didn’t like the song choice for Lee’s rock sound and suggested Kings of Leon would have been a better fit. Kara said the song had a small range that forced Lee to make some changes to the song that didn’t really work. Simon disagreed and thought it was the best performance of the night so far (Lee was the seventh to perform). Simon said Lee is a naturally good singer and predicted he will do well in the competition.
Overall impression: I really like Lee. We didn’t see much of him during the earlier rounds of the competition, and I’d like to see him return. A dark horse, perhaps?
Grade: B
John Park
Song choice: “God Bless the Child” by Billie Holiday
Vocals: Very strong
Judges comments: Simon criticized the song choice, saying that it was a pointless performance that left him flat. Kara agreed and said the performance was indulgent. Randy commended his voice, but said that the song didn’t work. Ellen, too, questioned the song choice, but liked the performance.
Overall impression: I absolutely love John’s voice, and he was someone who stood out for me during the early auditions. But I would like to see John sing something a bit more modern. It’s hard to envision what kind of artist John would be, but I think he certainly deserves another shot based on his voice alone.
Grade: B-
Michael Lynche
Song choice: “This Love” by Maroon 5 with guitar
Vocals: Good
Judges comments: Ellen said Michael is infectious he has a great personality that really comes across on stage. Randy said he likes Michael’s energy and persona. Kara said there were good things about the performance but that it wasn’t outrageously great, and that Big Mike should challenge himself more. Simon said it was a vague, jazzy version, but that he needs to nail the song and get people to listen as an artist.
Overall impression: Michael is just really likable. This performance didn’t showcase a lot of vocal skill, but it was fun and Michael was having fun. I would like to hear more of his vocal range. Don’t think that will be a problem given some of the other performances of the night.
Grade: B
Alex Lambert
Song choice: “What a Wonderful World” by James Morrison
Vocals: So-so; a couple notes made me cringe
Judges comments: Simon said the performance was incredibly uncomfortable. Kara said Alex needed a hug. Despite the awkward performance, the vocal talent is there. Randy said Alex has the voice, but that pulling it together is the problem. Ellen complimented the mullet and the voice.
Overall impression: Maybe I’m comparing Alex Lambert to Adam Lambert, but that performance just didn’t work. Despite a decent voice, Alex completely lacked confidence, and it was just really awkward. I’m so happy Ellen mentioned the mullet. It was borderline mullet and I couldn’t help but stare at it throughout the performance wondering if it truly qualified as a mullet.
Grade: D+
Casey James
Song choice: “Heaven” by Bryan Adams with guitar
Vocals: Excellent
Judges comments: The lovestruck Kara couldn’t speak. Ellen said it didn’t matter, she’ll get votes like crazy. Randy said it was a great song choice. When Kara pulled herself together, she said he is eye candy and ear candy. Simon said he chose the right song and the performance was honest and sincere and his personal best.
Overall impression: Casey has star power. Great voice. May be the next Bo Bice, but only way, way hotter.
Grade: A-
Andrew Garcia
Song choice: “Sugar We’re Going Down” by Fallout Boy with guitar
Vocals: Solid
Judges comments: Simon said he was looking forward to Andrew’s performance the most, and that it was a letdown and too serious. Kara said it was a strange rendition of that song. Randy and Ellen think his Hollywood Week performance of “Straight Up” will carry him through.
Overall impression: I’ve been a big Andrew fan from the beginning. Tonight’s performance wasn’t his personal best (“Straight Up” was amazing), but he’s the kind of guy you want to see win, and I love how he puts his own stamp on every song.
Grade: B+
Now it’s your turn: What did you think of tonight’s performances? Who should stay and who should go?
Did the ladies outshine the gentlemen this week (or vice versa)?
Simon Cowell predicts a female will win “American Idol” this year. The ladies were out to prove him right tonight during the first live episode.
During the next three weeks, the ladies and gentlemen will perform on separate nights. Each week, two guys and two girls will go home based on America’s vote until all that remains is the Top 12.
Who got it mostly right tonight? Crystal Bowersox, Katelyn Epperly, Katie Scott, Michelle Delamor
Who should go home based on tonight’s performance? Lacey Brown, Haeley Vaughn. But I have to say Haeley’s past performances could carry her through, which could mean farewell to Ashley Rodriguez or Janell Wheeler.
Here’s tonight’s scorecard:
Paige Miles
Song choice: “It’s All Right Now” by Free
Vocals: Strong
Judges comments: Simon said she has the best voice out of all the girls, but her performance was “wedding singer”-ish. Kara loved her choice of a rock song. Randy didn’t like the song choice, but still thought she showed her talent. Ellen thought it was an overall good performance, especially being the first of the first live night.
Overall impression: A very good singer, but not the best song choice. This is the most we’ve seen of Paige so far, and I think she’ll be back based on tonight’s performance.
Grade: B-
Ashley Rodriguez
Song choice: “Happy” by Leona Lewis
Vocals: Average
Judges comments: The judges agreed the song was probably too big for Ashley once again another case of choosing a song by an artist that is simply too big to take on. Simon took it a step further and said it was “clumsy” and lacked originality.
Overall impression: Ashley’s stage presence and overall marketability could save her this week.
Grade: C
Janell Wheeler
Song choice: “What About Love?” by Heart
Vocals: So-so. A little screechy at times.
Judges comments: The judges were mixed on this one. Randy, Simon and Kara didn’t like the song choice, but Ellen did.
Overall impression: A Heart song can make or break you. Think back to Carrie Underwood and Allison Iraheta’s versions of “Alone.” Janell’s performance cannot compare. But I think her audition and Hollywood Week performances, as well as her general likability, will carry her through this time.
Grade: C+
Lilly Scott
Song choice: “Fixing a Hole” by The Beatles, with guitar
Vocals: Good, very distinct voice
Judges comments: Ellen loved it. Simon commended her for choosing a song that fit her, but said he wasn’t seeing any “star power” yet. Kara said her performance came from the heart and that she sensed her comfort on stage.
Overall impression: Lilly is an indie artist and gave a very genuine, heartfelt performance I guess it will all come down to whether Lilly’s sound fits with this competition.
Grade: B
Katelyn Epperly
Song choice: “Oh! Darling” by The Beatles
Vocals: Strong, with a lot of range and personality
Judges comments: Simon, despite a few screechy moments, thought it was a brave performance and a good song choice. “I like you a lot,” he said. Kara said she could tell Katelyn has been singing all her life and really knows her voice and how to use it well. Randy also acknowledged she really knows her vocals. Ellen questioned if it was too much.
Overall impression: Katelyn’s definitely a performer with a strong voice to back it up. She’ll stick around for awhile. And love the hair.
Grade: B+
Haeley Vaughn
Song choice: “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” by The Beatles, with guitar
Vocals: So-so some great and not-so-great moments. To borrow a classic Randy line, it was a little “pitchy.”
Judges comments: The judges were torn on this one. Kara criticized her technical delivery. Randy complimented her unpredictability but questioned her delivery on the high notes. Ellen said she really shines on stage. Simon said it “verged on terrible” and that she smiled too much.
Overall impression: Kind of a cheesy performance. She is young and was trying to have fun, but it was still a bit over the top for me. I was hoping for more from Haeley. At least she put her own spin on the classic song. When she auditioned, she said she wanted to be a country artist, and that made her stand out. But for some reason she seems to be searching for her identity on stage when she had it all along.
Grade: C-
Lacey Brown
Song choice: “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac
Vocals: Not good on this song at least
Judges comments: Randy said it was terrible, pitchy and not right for her voice. Ellen said she really likes Lacey, but that performance didn’t work. Simon said it was indulgent and depressing — and boring. Kara said Lacey usually hits notes with ease, but she struggled this time because of the song choice.
Overall impression: Lacey has the potential to be good, but I don’t think she did enough tonight to stick around to prove it.
Grade: C-
Michelle Delamor
Song choice: “Fallin’” by Alicia Keys
Vocals: Good, but it’s hard to compete with Alicia Keys.
Judges comments: Ellen thought it was fantastic, but a safe choice. Simon said she did well and was close to the original, but not as good. He said there was no “wow” moment and that it wasn’t different. Kara said there were a few technical issues with the performance and that she needs some more believability. Randy said it was a tough song to do, but she did pretty well. Randy encouraged her to take some risks.
Overall impression: Michelle could be a real contender in this competition if she can find her identity. Strong voice and very marketable. She’s the overall package.
Grade: B
Didi Benami
Song choice: “The Way I am” by Ingrid Michaelson
Vocals: Good. Didi has a folksy-indie vibe.
Judges comments: Simon said she’s a good singer, and everyone is trying to sound like the same artist. He said he’s missing a spark, but that he likes her. Kara said the song choice was good and that she showed her creative side by taking some risks. Randy said Didi was missing the star factor. Ellen said she has a great look and voice, but that the first impression was too low-key.
Overall impression: Despite the judges’ criticisms, I do think Didi knows who she is and has made a strong impression so far. Didi is one of those people you truly want to see go far.
Grade: B
Siobhan Magnus
Song choice: “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak
Vocals: Started off a little rough and borderline creepy, but got much better quickly
Judges comments: Kara said she kinda liked it despite the fact it was a little nasaly and that Siobhan made a connection with people. Randy said this song didn’t showcase her range of vocal talent. Ellen loved the mystery and her stage presence. Simon said she’s a “funny little thing” but that he liked it despite it being a very dark song.
Overall impression: I’m intrigued with Siobhan. I didn’t love this performance, but there’s something about her. Hope she sticks around.
Grade: B
Crystal Bowersox
Song choice: “Hand in My Pocket” by Alanis Morissette with guitar and harmonica.
Vocals: Excellent. I got goosebumps
Judges comments: Randy said she’s one of his favorites for her originality and the honesty even if not the best song choice for her. Ellen said she adds “something fresh” to the show. Simon said Crystal needs to make a song her own by doing something no one else has done, but that she’s refreshing and will do well. Kara said she has the ability to take people on a journey, but didn’t do that tonight.
Overall impression: I agree this didn’t show her star quality as much as some of her earlier performances, but she is great. I love her voice and her stage presence. Definitely the best of the night. O-H-I-O!
Grade: A-
Katie Stevens
Song choice: “Feeling Good” by Michael Buble
Vocals: What a big voice for such a young girl! Excellent, but off key at times.
Judges comments: The judges were unanimous in this one - the song was too old for Katie and that she needs to be more current. Nonetheless, she has some real talent.
Overall impression: Despite the judges’ criticism, I think Katie showed her potential and real vocal skills. Katie will do very well in this competition. She’s adorable, has great stage presence and a big voice.
Grade: B+
Your turn: Who should stay? Who should go?
Up next: The guys perform in a two-hour episode on Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST on Fox. The results show will air Thursday.
Before tonight and Wednesday’s two-hour episodes airing at 8 p.m. EST on Fox, brush up on your Top 24. Tonight, the top 12 ladies will perform and Wednesday, the top 12 guys will perform.
On Thursday, two girls and two guys will be sent home after America votes.
And attention all Allison Iraheta fans from Season 8. Iraheta, who was the last girl standing last season, will perform her new single, “Scars” on the first American Idol results show of the season Thursday, Feb. 25 8/7c on FOX. And of course, American Idol Season 8 winner Kris Allen will perform.
Anyone who was watching Wednesday’s Top 24 revealing “ceremonies” on “American Idol” this week probably noticed something odd.
In revealing the Top 12 guys, something just didn’t add up. During the episode, we saw 12 females and 11 males receive word from the judges they made it. Toward the very end of the show, contestant Chris Golightly (curly hair, sort of like Justin Guarini’s from Season One) was seen among the 24 semifinalists on stage with host Ryan Seacrest. But during the preview for next week’s episodes featuring each contestant individually, Golightly was not mentioned and Tim Urban was featured (where did he come from?)
