Everhart thrilled with Middies’ start in weight room

Middletown High School football coach Troy Everhart said players showed up in abundance this week as the team began 2012 weight training.

Everhart said 81 players were in attendance Tuesday, followed by 85 on Thursday and 77 on Friday.

“Those are unbelievable numbers when considering the amount of kids we have in winter sports,” Everhart said. “Seventy-seven is really unbelievable for a Friday.”

He said he always begins his weight training the day after Martin Luther King Day, giving kids plenty of time off once the season has ended.

The Middies will lift at 2:35 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays the rest of the school year.

Middletown went 10-2 in 2011 and will open the 2012 campaign in the Crosstown Showdown. Everhart said the opponent has yet to be finalized.

“If you want to win the way we want to win at Middletown, you’ve got to get kids in the weight room,” Everhart said. “I really feell good about the way we’ve started. You’ve got to like it.”
