Division III State Championship: Madison falls to Liberty-Benton

Madison dropped a 66-44 decision to Findlay Liberty-Benton in the Division III state championship game Saturday, March 20, at Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center.

Division III State Championship: Madison down 13

Liberty-Benton leads Madison 53-40 heading to the fourth quarter of the Division III state championship game.

The Eagles outscored the Mohawks 15-6 in the third quarter.

LB’s Amanda Hyde leads all scorers with 17 points, including a layup right before the third-quarter buzzer.

Brittany Shields has a team-high 11 points for Madison.

No sooner than Madison cut the Liberty-Benton lead to 2 points, the Eagles responded with seven straight points to make it 47-38 with 3:50 to go in the third. Timeout Madison.

It’s 40-38 Liberty-Benton with about 5 minutes to go in the third quarter here at the Schottenstein Center.

D-III State Championship: Madison within 4 at the half

We’re at halftime of the Division III state championship game at the Schottenstein Center. Liberty-Benton leads Madison 38-34 in a fast-paced, up-and-down the floor affair.

Madison trailed by as many as 13 early in the second, but rallied to get back into the game just before halftime.

Brittany Shields has nine points, Lindsay Hoskins eight and Adrianne Lehman seven for Madison. Ally Malott has six points, and has snared seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Hoskins has six boards and two steals.

Madison is shooting 50 percent from the field (13 of 26), and has outrebounded Liberty Benton 17-12.

The Eagles have been led by Amanda Hyde, who leads all players with 13 points. Amanda Peterson has 10 points.

Liberty-Benton has hit 13-of-25 shots, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range.

A coast-to-coast drive by Lindsay Hoskins and a open 3-pointer and a free throw by Adrianne Lehman gets madison back to within 4 points (34-30) with just over 2 minutes to play in the first half.

Liberty-Benton scores nine straight points to start the 2nd to grab a 32-19 lead. But a bucket inside by Ally Malott and a 3-pointer by Brittany Shields trims the Madison deficit to 32-24 with 4:32 left before halftime.

D-III State Championship: First quarter update

The title game between two undefeated teams — Madison and Findlay Liberty-Benton — has lived up to its billing through the first 8 minutes.

The game is being played a frenzied pace, and Liberty-Benton leads 23-19. Amanda Hyde leads the Eagles with 9 points. Amanda Peterson has seven.

Brittany Shields has six points to lead Madison.

The Eagles are 8-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range.

Madison is 7-of-16, including 1-of-6 from long range. ‘

And both teams trade 3s on their opening possessions. Should be a great game.

D-III State Championship: Defense wins?

The Madison Mohawks’ defensive scoring average of 31.3 points allowed per game was the best among the 16 teams who advanced to the state finals in Columbus.

That defense will need to shut down Liberty-Benton’s 3-point shooting in today’s title game. The Eagles hit 7-of-22 attempts in their semifinal win over Smithville on Thursday. For the season, Liberty-Benton has drained 221 treys.

We’re about 7 minutes from tip off here at the Schottenstein Center.

Division III State Championship: Eagles edge in experience?

Findlay Liberty-Benton is in the Division III state title game for the second straight year.

The Eagles lost 59-30 to South Euclid Regina in last year’s title game. Seven Liberty-Benton players who were on the roster for that game are on the roster for today’s title tilt against Madison.

The Mohawks are making their first trip to state and first appearance in the state championship game.

Madison and Findlay Liberty-Benton just look the floor here at the Schottenstein Center for pre-game warmups.

The Mohawks (27-0) and Eagles (26-0) are scheduled to tip off for the Division III state title at 10:45 a.m.
