Lakota West’s May catching pro teams’ attention

Lakota West High senior Jacob May has already signed to play for Coastal Carolina, but it appears the INF/OF will have a big decision to make come June.

That’s when the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft will be held, and May is getting quite a bit of attention from scouts.

“I’ve heard from a lot of scouts,” West coach Bill Dreisbach said. “I’ve received about 12 to 15 letters concerning Jacob asking for recommendations. That’s not so uncommon, but I know there’s a lot of interest.”

Last week at practice, a scout from the Angels watched May take infield and batting practice.

“Jake’s a guy who’s really got a legitimate shot of being drafted in the top 10 to 15 rounds,” Dreisbach said. “He’s got the tools, no doubt about it. It will be up to him and his family whether he’ll go to college or play pro ball.”

Last season, May was a first-team, all-GMC and second-team, all-state selection. He hit .423 with four home runs and 41 runs batted in.

May will move over to shortstop after starting at second base last year. He can also play the outfield.
