Sinclair wins state OK to consider fee hike
DAYTON - Sinclair Community College recently received approval from the Ohio Board of Regents and the state controlling board to consider increasing the technology fee charged to students.
Sinclair trustees already hiked tuition 3.5 percent for next school year so the fee increase would be above the state cap and required approval from Columbus, according to college and state officials.
Trustees have not set a date to vote on the proposed increase that would be phased in over three years and eventually raise $4.6 million a year. Students would see an increase of roughly $3 a credit hour, said Natasha Baker, school spokeswoman.
The money will be used to fund efforts to improve technology across campus, Baker said. “We have already updated 230 labs across campus and have a little over 150 or so still to do.” The school will spend $40 million over the next decade improving technology, she said.
Upgrades will included computers and other technology to help with on-line course offering that was a big reason the increase won approval from Chancellor Eric Fingerhut, said his spokesman Rob Evans.
Fees at other local community colleges have risen steadily since 2000, according to the annual survey of student charges compiled by the Ohio Board of Regents. Fees at Sinclair have been stagnant for 25 years, Baker said.
College trustees don’t meet until the fall and it is unclear if they will vote then on the proposed phased-in fee increase, Baker said.

Just keep on taking Sinclair. Take, take, take. I say take away the taxpayer money you receive from Mont. Co. residents now. Tuition hikes twice in the last academic year & now this. I’m sure you’ll still be able to say that you have the lowest tuition costs in the state, though.

I also go to Sinclair, and I too just paid $205 dollars for a book, but that book can be used for A&P 1,2,&3, so it’s not as bad as it sounds. As for tuition, Sinclair is awesome. Especially compared to local alternatives, if you think they are too expensive, go to MUM where they will charge you almost $200/cr. hr!! I do think, however, that Sinclair needs to address there admissions, I don’t think that they should let everyone in that applies, you need to show that you really want to learn, not waste your time and mine.

to the peeps complaining about book costs…i took a course at Edison 5 or 6 years ago and the book only cost me $8 online, … of course, it was current in 1986. I like Sinclair because they do have current technology and current books

See, here’s government waste. Sinclair has to have State approval to ‘consider’ fee increases? Can’t they just approve or disapprove the increase? How many State employees were required for this newsworthy decision?

People please remember that Sinclair does not set the prices on their text books. The publisher does. Check the prices of any book at any legitemate college and you will see Sinclair has competively priced books. And their tuition is going up $3?!?!?!?! Wow don’t go to Star Bucks ONE time and Ta Da! You have your $3. Quit whinning and realize you have it like Royalty at Sinclair.

Sinclair Community College in Dayton Ohio may be losing their Nursing License as soon as January 2011. Sinclair Community Colleges Nursing Program knowingly let Nursing Professor (Mary Beth Lodge) teach nursing students for 5 years without having a nursing license. Marcia Miller (Program Director) & Mary Beth Lodge (Sinclair Nursing Professor) are both facing felony charges from the State of Ohio. Gloria Goldman (Assistant Nursing Provost) & Marcia Miller ( Sinclair Nursing School Program Director) are both on administrative leave until investigation is completed and Sinclair Nursing Professor Mary Beth Lodge has been fired.

if complaints concerning the rising costs of tuition & books upsets you… it is the Admission process that should be questioned. it is fact that Sinclair does not promote true diversity… 99.9% of the programs are directed to “children” who just grad from HS and who by their own testing scores would not be successfully in college if someone were not holding their hand… another reason why HS grads need to take time off before attending postsec inst. Another would be that they would appreciate the opportunity of a postsec inst as well as gain marketable employee skills. Hint: Fortune 500 employers are hesitate to hire the current generation of 20s because of the “me attitude” which by the way is the predominant mentality of majority in the Miami Valley area. The “real” complaint is Sinclair’s discriminatory business practices… not providing same opportunities to traditional (older) students… this is the real crime not tuition rates and book charges…

Sinclair could more than double tuition and still be a great deal. They chare 1/4 of what these joke career colleges do and are more respected by employers. We (the students) will benefit the most. If you don’t like the book charges, you can rent your books or buy them from online dealers for much less. Or GASP share a book, split the price and make a friend.

Sinclair definitely needs to expand. They need to come up with more parking, Having to park all the way over at UD arena and take a shuttle bus back to Sinclair sucks the big one.

Sinclair is one of the top community colleges in the country. It is also a working persons college. The provide so many resources and opportunities for people to go to school like online and hub stations. We should never demean the school. If they raise the tuition 10 dollars they will still have the lowest tuition around. The provide and awesome education, and I don’t know a school around that does not accept their credits. No matter what people say on this comment section, they all know that Sinclair is a really good school overall and a tuition hike was coming considering I’ve been going their for years and they haven’t raised it much since then. Give the school a break.
