UPDATED with Gov. Kasich response: Kasich critics set Dayton press conference on “Pass the buck” budget
Critics of Republican Gov. John Kasich’s proposed state budget on Thursday have set a 10 a.m. press conference in Dayton at Fire Company #2, Third and Keowee Ave., a press release said.
City Commissioner Matt Joseph, FOP President Randy Beane, AFSCME President Ken Sulfridge, firefighter Dave Wright and other local officials will discuss what they consider to be “harmful effects” of the budget that will result in job losses and loss of financial support for schools and communities, the release said.
Rob Nichols, Kasich’s spokesman, responded in an email:
“It’s disingenuous to complain unless they’ve taken the effort to say how they would fill the $8 billion hole in the state budget.
“People who complain without offering their own ideas don’t really deserve a response.”
The press conference comes as the Senate continues to work on its version of the budget, with a vote likely the week of June 6. The House earlier passed its version of the budget.
Supporters of the proposed budget say it provides tools to school districts and local governments to help cope with reductions in state support.

Strickland spent liked a school girl with a stolen credit card while he was in office. Look at all the suffering he has left behind. Some people may lose their jobs because of Strickland’s recklessness. But the Democrats want to blame Kasich for doing his job. How about you shut up for a second so Kasich can mop up the mess Strickland left behind? Huh? How about you Democrats sit in the back of the bus, since you act like enemies of the Tax Paying Public? This is the kind of rhetoric Obama and the Democrats have used… you want Republicans to treat Obama with respect? How about he stop acting like he’s the president of Venezuela first? Or how about you show Kasich the respect of his office and give him a chance? I guess the Democrats would rather lie, cheat, and steal…behind closed doors with all that “transparency” that Obama promised. Some transparency…

Mom, The DDN article you quoted was probably the result of a March 25, Policy Matters press release. The following is a quotation from the Ohio Department of Taxation regarding foregone revenue (tax deductions) from the press release:” The report extimates foregone revenue, which is not necessarily what the state would get if a tax expenditure was repealed.” That means that taxes gained could be lost to job loss (loss of personal income tax and unemployment benefits)) or other unintended consequences. The state legislature is responsible for eliminating tax credits, exemptions, and deductions. They should be reviewed, but the trade off of cost vs. benefit shouldn’t be ignored. Eliminating tax credits or deductions certainly isn’t a panacea for Ohio’s budget problem. As with ones personal budget, when expenditures exceed revenue, expenditures must shrink. Try searching “tax credit” on the DDN web site. You will see a correlation between tax credits and jobs.

Every one should pull the burdon, not just the people getting disability. Tax all income levels evenly and we might pull out of this.

SOS, if you are $800 dollars short on your monthly budget, would you flush $80 dollars down the toilet? I realized it is a small percentage, but it is not nothing! ALL areas should be explored, even if the savings seems small. Why maintain deductions that serve few people, don’t create jobs and are outdated? That is just stupid!

Who would think that union officials, politicans, and a firefighter would have problems with a budget designed to cut deficits? Hey, DDN how about interviewing a regular tax-paying citizen?

Mom, 330 million is less than 10% of the budgetshortfall. Where wil the other 90% come from? Why is the argument always personal, that certain people are targeted to suffer? Strickland offered no budget solutions. Had he done so, he might have gotten my vote. He chose to run a campaign of denial when huge, inevitable deficits were on the horizon. There are no easy answers or federal band aids for Kasich.

“Pass the buck” is correct, passed from our previous Governor to the present. Ouch, the truth hurts doesn’t it? Previous administrations only gets blamed if it was a Republican, as in BHO blaming Bush for his failure to do what he promised (lied about).

Last week the DDN published an article where 300 million dollars could be saved by eliminating little used and ineffective tax deductions. Organizations on the right, left, and in the middle support removing these deductions. Kasich opposes removing them. Unless he is willing to eliminate tax deductions such as these, he is not serious about the budget. He only want certain people to suffer, and it certainly isn’t his friends.

If we had the tax system we had in 2004, we wouldn’t have this deficit. Buckeye Institute and Bob Taft lied about how much revenue their new tax system would create.

You could tax the rich at 100% and it still wouldn’t pay the budget. So many people have said it but I will repeat it, how about the govt. doesn’t spend more money than it brings in?

Raise taxes on the rich! Studies show they’ll still spend their dollars and not hoard their millions. Stop crushing the middle class to save the budget. The separation between the rich and the middle class is widening and outrageous. It’s turning into kings and paupers around here. Work on your butler skills.

Matt Joseph et al chose to ignore the fact that the state of Ohio faces a four bilion dollar annual shortfall. This is more political theatre unless thoughtful alternative reductions are offered. Joseph should spend his time on more creative endeavors on behalf of the city…Nevermind. It’s an elcetion year.

the money just isn’t in the State budget…Unlike the Feds who can just run off another batch of twenties should the need arise. Sorry dudes, the State of Ohio just doesn’t have the money to placate everybody…Yes, it’s gonna hurt.
