Strickland spares killer’s life

Gov. Ted Strickland decided to commute the death sentence for inmate Richard Nields to life in prison without parole.

Strickland made the announcement Friday, June 4, six days before Nields was scheduled to die by lethal injection.

The Ohio Parole Board recommended in May that Nields be granted a commutation to life in prison without parole. The board cited medical testimony at Nields’ trial that was later called into question, Ohio Supreme Court Justice Paul Pfeiffer’s dissenting opinion when the court upheld Nields’ conviction, and concerns expressed by judges on the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Strickland said he reviewed that material and more and decided to concur with the Parole Board.

Nields, now 60, was convicted in the March 1997 aggravated murder and robbery of Patricia Newsome in Springfield Twp., in Hamilton County.

This year, Ohio is second in the nation as far as executions go, carrying out the sentence at a pace of almost one a month with two already scheduled for 2011. So it DOES get used, if that brings anyone any comfort.

I thought we have put some to death during Strickland’s term. This case was determined by the parole board to not carry out the death sentence. The Gov. will 9/10 times follow the what the Parole board suggest. Has nothing to do with Rep. or Dem. most will follow the Parole Board decision.

Why are you all so surprised? Strickland is a liberal dem, and like all libs, are far more concerned with protecting the rights of murderers, terrorists, child rapists and the like, than common, decent, hardworking folks. Just remember the power is yours…either vote these liberal dunces out or suffer!

to Dan Hoover and others that don’t believe in the dealth penalty and choose to attack Christians who do believe in it: If he would have obeyed God’s law, then he wouldn’t have KILLED that woman. He was convicted in court and deserves to die. And BTW, God is not against this man paying for what he did. All through the Bible there are wars and people die. If you read the Bible you would know that instead of condemning Christians who believe in the death penalty for convicted killers. Don’t try to tell Christians anything because you show your ignorance.

He robbed a woman and then killed her, he was convicted and given the death sentence, but he’s still alive because Strickland decided he should live. Nice. Can you vote Strickland out of office. YOU BETCHA! That woman he killed is still dead. That’s what the dealth penalty is there for! Now we can use our tax $ to feed him and let him rest comfortably the rest of his life. Nice.

Typical liberal, you want to spare the life of a killer, but you don’t care to murder a child that has done nothing more than to have been concieved.

I have seen both sides of the system and when you can’t even have a judge investigated or do anythign to a corrupt one, then I have to doubt the system. Hint, you CAN be convicted and incarcerated even when all parties agree you did NOT do the crime the judge convicts you of and he can delay the written decision several months until after you served so you can’t appleal it. Too many people are jailed for political and personal beliefs of the judges costing us tons of money and the really guilty walk for the same reasons.

First of all, Xam, felons CANNOT vote. I don’t know where you get your info, but you are incorrect. Secondly, I don’t mind people getting life in prison, but if they do we should use the justice system from long ago. No bedding, no blankets, no pillows, bread and water, no tv, solitary confinement, etc. It would cost about 300.00 a year at most for taxpayers. I’m willing to fork out that 300.00 for the person to live the rest of their life miserably. Eventho it’s not up to us to decide another’s fate…….

Well you dont think you should have to spend your own money to get food you order from the “COMISARY”,,,us tax payers are keeping you “THUGS” up as it is. It is only right if you want extras to spend your own money to get them. As far as it being a “country club” it is close trust me I work in the system and do know what I am talking about. If you dont like looking behind your back as you take a shower you should have thought about that before you done the crime!!! You need to be bunked up with some big “BULL QUEER” maybe then you would see things differently. The tax payers dont owe you convicts anything,in fact I think you owe us since we are the ones paying for your crimes!!! Get a life “THUG”

YOU CAN NOLT ORDER FOOD YOU HAVE A COMISARY THAT YOU HAVE TO SPEND YOUR OWN MONEY . YOU DO NOT MAKE $8/DAY YOU MAKE BETWEEN $.80-$1.25 S A CLERK FOR THE WARDEN AND THERE IS ONLY ONE CLERK. S UNLESS YOU LIKE LOOKING BEHIND YOUR BACK JUST TO TAKE A SHOWER ,NEXT DO SOME VISITING, I KNOW THIS FROM THE 3 YEARS I SERVED……

Max, what the heck are you thinking? Incarcerated felons have always been able to vote Democrat - even dead felons can vote for Democrats. Max, where have you been? You need to get out more.

By all right!!

Great - another scumbag that my tax dollars will pay to feed, clothe & shelter for how many more years??? They shouldn’t be letting more of these jerks off the hook, they should be speeding up the process. It would not only free up prison space for the next round of degenerates it would probably put some money back into the state budget. Of course they’d find some other way to waste it I’m sure.

Kind of sick how many people beg for inmates to be killed, especially when an appeals court has found possible fault with the EVIDENCE THAT THE JURY BASED THEIR OPINIONS ON. Take a look here, and if you don’t take pause, then you don’t appreciate life: http://www.innocenceproject.org/know/Browse-Profiles.php

There is no sense in having the death penalty as an option if it is not going to be used. This man was obviously found guilty and the case fit the criteria to make it a death penalty case. In this case, justice for Patricia Newsome has been denied. If Strickland can’t or won’t uphold jury recommendations, perhaps he is in the wrong occupation.
