Portman and Fisher neck-and-neck in U.S. Senate poll

Republican Rob Portman and Democrat Lee Fisher are in a virtual tie in a possible matchup in next year’s U.S. Senate race among likely voters, according to a poll released on Thursday, Dec. 10.

The Rasmussen Reports poll, also showed Portman, a former Cincinnati-area U.S. House member, leading Democrat Jennifer Brunner, the secretary of state, 40-33 percent in another possible matchup.

Against Fisher, the lieutenant governor, Portman led 38-36 percent, a virtual tie.

The three candidates are seeking the seat being vacated by retiring Republican Senator George Voinovich. Portman also served as budget director and U.S. trade representative under President George W. Bush. He is running against Cleveland-area car dealer Tom Ganley for the GOP Senate nomination.

In other poll results:

*Overall, 41 percent of Ohio voters support the health care plan proposed by President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats, with 53 percent opposed.

*Ohio voters are divided over the idea of a government “public option” for health care, with 40 percent in favor and 38 percent opposed. However, 58 percent oppose such an option if it might cause employers to drop coverage and push their workers onto the government-run plan.

*More than a week after the president announced plan to send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan, 48 percent support his decision to do so, with 30 percent opposed.

*Overall, 46 percent approve of President Barack Obama’s job performance, while 50 percent disapprove.

The poll was taken on Monday, Dec. 7, with 500 likely voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

Phlogiston, Are you going to continue to perpetrate that lie even after you have been shown the facts? Mr. Holcomb( the poor abused Korean Veteran - according to you) was given $200,000 for his property in a neighborhood that had seen better days and appraised for between $20,000 and $29,000. I wish someone would PLEASE take advantage of me in the same manner. You know that I spoke with Romie and he was not upset at all. Why would you be the only one angry about this and why do you carry such a political torch (Now that Tom Ganley is running for the U. S. Senate) ?

Why are we only reporting the major party candidates???? We have options other then those on the Rep. and Dem. ticket, I think it is WAY past due we give them a fair shake, they are just as good, if not better. Check out www.swartzforsenate.com, for instance. Jeremy is someone I would want representing the State of Ohio in Washington rather then more of the same… career politicians!

Tom Ganley can not be trusted. Back in 2001, Ganley’s company basically blackmailed the Akron City Council into seizing the home of an elderly couple (a Korean war vet and his wife) under eminent domain so that Ganley Toyota could buy it from the city. No offers from Ganley. No negotiation. Just the economic blackmail of seizing that couple’s property or jobs would move to a suburb. Ganley should be nowhere near actual power.

Wow a choice between Portman who did so well with Bush or Fisher who’s done so well with Strickland. I love our democracy.

When the Democrats left office we had a balanced budget and were on our way to paying off the National Debt. Eight years of Republican rule and we were running a deep deficit and we were in the worst recession since the Great Depression. Democrats have been left to put out the fire and the guys who lit the fire are pissing on us. We need to stand up to them. Gerald Sharkey

Why is it they don’t list the 56% oppose Obama Health Care, NO they put in the 41%. They think we don’t know what we want. 56% don’t want it. Hmm

Sorry duffo-crats, next year is going to be as painful to you as a prostate exam done with a baseball glove. The Ohio senate seat and the governorship will go to republicans. Congress won’t switch hands, but it will be close.
