Court reinstates death sentence for killer
An Ohio man with a long history of luring gay men into secluded areas to rob them can be put to death for a 1985 murder case, the U.S. Supreme Court decided in a 9-0 ruling released Monday, Nov. 9.
The ruling reinstates the death sentence of Robert Van Hook for the murder of David Self.
The sentence had been set aside earlier this year when the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that defense attorneys failed to uncover information about Van Hook’s childhood.
Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray appealed that ruling, saying Van Hook’s lawyers performed adequately. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed.
“We are very pleased with the court’s decision,” Cordray said. “The trial court learned extensive details about Mr. Van Hook’s difficult childhood and upbringing, but the court still elected to impose a death sentence. That decision was appropriate given the horrific nature of the murder in this case.”
Van Hook met Self in a Cincinnati bar, lured him to an apartment for sex, strangled him, mutilated his body and robbed him.

Pete, you’re hired. However, we would sell more tickets if the sorry SOB had a gun, too. Like an Old West shootout.

Easy way to do this execution is one shot, one kill. Just make the one shot just on the edge of the carotid artery so the SOB can bleed to death very, very slowly. & I’ll agree that 24 years is WAY too friggin’ long to kill his sorry A$$.

20 years is to long for someone like this to be a burden to society. Justice system works but is often to slow!!

I hope the guy dies a slow painful death, much worse than his victim.

So, Bulldog, I see the republicans have sucked you right in. They see your ignorance, seize on it and take you for granted. No wonder the common man has suffered ever since Reagan was elected. Somehow “liberals” are either undereducated or highly educated based off your statement, well no duh. It’s people like you that have set America back 50 years after numerous years of progress

Definition of a liberal: a whiner, a complainer, a smoker, probably divorced, undereducated, underemployed or a highly educated person with an impracticle degree who inhereited money (never earned it), elitist, a blame america first person who always beleives that we (society) owes it to life’s loosers to provide them with things they dont’ deserve or want to earn for themselves. By the way this was the abbreviated version of what a liberal is.

It just goes to show you that when reasonable people can disagree on every aspect of the death penalty, there can’t be enough due process to justify execution, which is draconian, imperfectly adjudicated/applied, and irrevocable.

THANK YOU Common Cents! I’m willing to bet that at least half the commenters on this site blaming everything on “liberals” would have a hard time defining the term.

Those of you on the right crying about this being some kind of Liberal decision that sent it to the Supreme Court need to learn the make up of the 6th Circuit Court. It is the most right-leaning appeals court in the US with over 75% of the judges being appointed by republican presidents. Their decision was appealed by a Democratic Attorney General. Learn the facts then comment. Better to be thought of as a fool than to post on the internet and remove all doubt

Actually, I hope they do botch it a little, so what if he gets poked with a needle a few times. A little suffering for all the suffering he caused his victims! Only a liberal would worry if executioners will the botch the execution of someone who tortured and mutilated their victims! What a crazy world!

If you are a democrat don’t be complaining about how the system is soft. Democrats in the judicial system are the ones doing this crap.

24 years? He has sat there for 24 years waiting to be put to death? They should have done it within 4. That would have been 20 years less that tax-payers would be carrying that burden.

Hopefully when they put him to death they will not botch this one.
