Voinovich, church and business leaders oppose Issue 3
In a last-ditch push to get the downsides of Issue 3 before voters, U.S. Sen. George Voinovich and business and religious leaders called the casino gambling proposal a rip off that will install monopolies in the state constitution, harm the poor, wreck families, and increase crime and addiction.
“I just want all of you to know this is a rip off. This is an absolute rip off in terms of the citizens of Ohio,” Voinovich said Tuesday, Oct. 30 at a press conference in downtown Columbus.
Joining Voinovich were the Ohio Council of Churches, Ohio Christian Alliance, Columbus Chamber of Commerce, state Rep. Ted Celeste, D-Columbus, and the Catholic Conference of Ohio.
The Ohio Council of Churches and Catholic Conference said through e-mails, video messages and church bulletins, they’re urging their collective 3.5 million members to vote No on Issue 3.
Issue 3, backed by Penn National Gaming and Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, would put casinos in Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati. Proponents say it’ll bring 19,000 construction jobs and 15,000 casino jobs to Ohio, result in at least $1 billion in investment, and generate $650 million a year in new revenue for local schools and local governments across the state.

I find it odd how our politicians rail against every single casino bill as something written by special interests for special interests, yet they never write one of their own that they think will benefit the citizens of Ohio. Yes, I think a casino bill could be better crafted but since our elected leaders in Columbus are such buffoons to write legislation they feel is good for all I had no other choice but to vote yes

How many jobs will this take away that normal spending produces? How are these low paying local jobs going to benefit the people of Ohio that will be on Food Stamps, etc because they won’t be paid enough to live on. In the end the State of Ohio will still increase taxes and the schools will still be putting on levies so what is acomplished if this passes? It acomplishes putting money in the wrong hands at the high end. The State will still increase taxes and continue to say how they do not have the money and plagerize children for the sake of getting it through when “ultimate reality” is the kids get screwed out of the help that they were “politically promised” and we all know what that means, which is it plainly doesn’t happen. Now take the burden chronic gamblers add to society and we have more money that has to come from social services to help the kids because their parent is spending their milk and food money gambling. Th ericher people who could actually help the economy by spending on new cars, etc will be spending their money at the casino, which most of the money will flow out of the state, so just how is this good for the PEOPLE of OHIO? Simply put IT IS NOT GOOD FOR OHIO IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM! That is why I alredy voted it down!!

The Ohio lottery was supposed to help the schools and didn’t.I doubt that issue will do any good to help the schhols either. It is just a way to get gambling started in Ohio.Gambling is a addiction and a lot of people gamble instead of providing food for their family.

Brown and Voinovich are both against it. Something must stink about it.

Poor George, he view of the world is stunted by his religious beliefs. He had no problems amending the Ohio constitution to prevent gays from marrying; he had no problem when businesses were put out of business by WalMart Supercenters coming to town; he has no problem with people being hurt by predatory credit car companies, or being made poor by private health insurance that can bankrupt any one of us on any day because a focus on profits will deny people the affordable coverage they need. So for George to caterwaul against casinos coming to Ohio is truly rich — and hypocritical. This deal could be better, but Voinovich and his cronies, on the right and left, have “dithered” on the issue of gambling for decades. The constitution can be amended — and unamended — by voters, if they so choose. It’s time to pop Ohio’s cherry and vote for Issue 3.

I’m torn, but probably leaning towards yes. Am I supposed to trust a politician, let alone a Dem?
