Strickland sets up auto industry support council
It’s not as snazzy as a “cash for clunkers” plan but Gov. Ted Strickland is trying to do his bit for the reeling auto industry.
Strickland on Wednesday, Aug. 5, announced formation of the Ohio Auto Industry Support Council, a public-private partnership aimed at helping Ohio businesses, workers and communities develop ways to stabilize and grow the auto industry.
Co-chairs are: Eric Burkland, president of the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association and Ken Lortz, director of Ohio’s United Auto Workers Region 2B.
Dennis Wojtanowski, a former Ohio House member and public affairs and public relations consultant, was named president of the council.
“The Ohio Auto Industry Support Council will work to assist our auto businesses up and down the supply line, to support workers who deserve a more certain future and to partner with our automotive communities as they respond to the impacts of the automotive crisis at the local level,” Strickland said in a press release.
Wojtanowski will join Strickland on Wednesday and Thursday in Detroit during the governor’s quarterly meetings with the Big 3 automakers, the release said.

I for one am glad that Governor Strickland is moving to address the problems of our remaining domestic auto manufacturers. If we no longer make products and sell them in the world we will certainly slip to second tier economic status.By Bubba

I wonder how much this “public-private partnership” is going to cost tax-payers. If you really want to help Ohio businesses, workers and communities develop ways to stabilize and grow the auto industry, then get government out of their way. Democrats aren’t trying to grow the economy, they’re trying to grow the government.By bobby

Wow, this will likely not get off the ground running with the union involved. If it did, it will be filled with the same bargining and limitation agreements that cause the big fall in the auto industry. Thank you Governor for not moving things in a more forward prositive manner.By Victimized

Once again, our crack team of effective government leadership in Columbus has seen something is amiss in the state’s business sector. It’s only taken years, and thousands of manufacturing losses in nearly every reasonably sized town and city in the state for them to take notice.
