AP: 40 million watched Palin speech

According to an Associated Press story just released, more than 40 million people watched Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin give her speech on Wednesday night.

That is more people than watched the American Idol finale or this year’s Academy Awards. It also rivals the audience that watched Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama’s acceptance speech from Denver last week. In comparison, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden’s speech was watched by 24 million people.

“Nielsen Media Research estimated 37.2 million people watched Palin on either ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel or MSNBC. PBS estimated it had 4 million viewers for the speech. Last week Obama had 38.4 million viewers on the commercial networks, topping 40 million with PBS and C-SPAN added in,” the AP article said.

I think McCain intentionally chose Palin to illustrate the cultural divide between the bitter midwest, clinging to our guns and religion, and the urban Obama. I don’t know why any sane person in Ohio would vote for the most liberal person in the senate, who is friends with a terrorist (Aires), was friends and benefited financially from a criminal (Rezko), and had a racist minister as his close personal advisor for 20 years. If his decision making in the White House is as poor as his ability to choose friends, the country will be in trouble.

Alice, you must be a paid Obama supporter, I mean come on, non stip with the copy and paste posts. Nonetheless, lets talk issues. Obama states he will raise taxes, and drop giving taxes to companies who ship jobs oversees. I wonder how many companies will move out of a state if he does so? Many. Healthcare- he can’t pay for it and you have no choice in your doc. Security. Clinton had numerous times and couldn’t pull the trigger, and we paid for it on 911. Think Obama can squeeze the trigger? I don’t. We’ll be in a wasteland while he decides if he is present or not present.

McCain has always been about change and his campaign has always been about change - they just used the word reform instead of change. Problem is people haven’t been listening. A fresh face, Obama, dominated and understandably. Times are tough and people need a change, but we left our blinders on and shut our ears and could not see or hear what he was trying to say. McCain has had a major battle of trying to get people to see him, see him for who he is. A man that cares deeply for our country, a man that will die for our country. People hear that and think he wants war. That is not true, he of all people knows how bad war is. He doesn’t want our citizens to experience the pain he has suffered. But he also does not want any group attacking us - he does not want to see us become the Middle East. McCain does know how to be diplomatic, he knows how to talk to Foreign Leaders. He knows about compromise. But he also knows to be strong, not to show weakness, weakness is an opening to be exploited. He knows to put America first and not to make a compromise that would hurt America. The most important task and to me the highest priority of the President is to protect America and keep her citizens safe. McCain will work with the foreign leaders and as they stand strong for their countries he will stand strong for our country. He will work with them to ensure we have a fair global economy. He will not put our country second to appease another country. He will not compromise our country.

No one has forgotten about 9/11. That is why I support the Democrats. Bush dropped the ball on persuing the real teerorist in Afghanistan and faked “intelligence” to justify invading Iraq. Obama knows we can achieve more through diplomacy. And he supports giving Vets the support they deserve for serving our country, not cutting their benefits like Bush and McCain did. My son-in-law was in the Air Force for 4 years and served in the Middle East, was discharged honorably, and he doesn’t have access to VA hospital treatment. As a veteran himself, McCain should support our vets. Whenever you Republicans can’t defend your positions on other issues, you trot out 9/11. It’s the exact same method used by W. Go back to your bunker.

republicans and conservatives refuse to deal with facts. they prefer emotion. strong emotion coming from the right wing are usually mixed with flawed or made up information. the war in iraq is based upon lies. it appears that conservatives prefer lies to facts. the 6% increase in health care is fact. the 6.2% and more increase in unemployment is fact. recession and energy problems are fact. a woman from alaska who cannot even manage or deal with her own family is fact. the republicans have an emotional problem.

Bush’s lied in order to start the war in Iraq. No nuclear WMD’s ever existed in Iraq. Also, Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. The terrorists on the planes were from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The true reason for the war in Iraq was and still is proliferation of oil. McCain would follow the Bush agenda. And, with health insurance going up over 6%. Unemployment going over 6.2%, the forclosure crisis, lack of jobs, inflation and and energy crisis, McCain would continue the damage Bush has caused. Palin would be better suited on the Home Shopping Network. The republicans offer nothing to the middle class.

Barry, I can only assume you make over $250,000 since you are under the impression that Obama will spend all your money and Bush hasn’t. Michael, you really need to get a job on Fox News as an in-depth reporter because I didn’t know we attacked Iraq because they caused 9-11. You really should share the evidence with the current administration and John McCain since they “say” they don’t agree. And Wordell, I won’t debate that there are personal attacks that do come from the left, but the Republican Convention centered around a declaration of war against “Hollywood types”, “latte-sippers”, “eastern elitists”, “liberal media”, San Francisco, “cosmopolitans”, so-called “misogynist press/democrats”, community organizers, and the list goes on. All of the people the RNC would like to disown, believe it or not, are also Americans who love their country even if you don’t agree with them. The dems have plenty of contempt for the Bush admin and push the McSame idea because they believe it based on voting records. Point to one speech at the DNC convention where they talked about “rednecks” or showed any disdain for small-town America, or even social conservatives. Even the term “liberal” was applied first by the RNC as an attack and although I believe in a lot of democratic ideas, I do not identify my beliefs as anything “liberal” and yet the term liberals use is “social conservative” for far right Republicans and that’s not a term you would deny because it isn’t meant as an insult. I don’t hate McCain. I think he’s an honorable patriot and deep down I think he’s a pretty decent guy, I just think his policies are completely wrong for our country. Despite the scripted statements from Republicans declaring Obama a decent American, there is a hatred by so many of Obama; they really equate him with some kind of a terrorist. This is what has been the most disturbing aspect of the last couple of elections. Bush’s campaign was very successful in defining other people with a one-liner and it worked in dividing our country and destroying so many things this country stands for.

Well, before I try to have that open dialogue, I should proof read my posts! My post with corrections: I just read the seven top myths about Sarah Palin on www.foxnews.com. This article said Palin does not want creation taught in the classroom as curriculum, rather; she would like the subject to be able creation to be discussed openly. I thought that is what makes America different, we have the right to free speech. Oh, that’s right, not when when it covers certain subjects in academia. Just watch Expelled with Ben Stein for interviews with those who found a brick wall on this topic. Maybe with Sarah Palin the walls will come down in many areas and we can have open dialogue again.

I find it hard to believe that anyone continues to rage against Governor Palin. Her husband had a dui 20 years ago, her daughter is pregnant, she was only a governor? Give me a break. Obama was doing lines of cocaine 20 years ago. His best friends include a Preacher that hates America and mocked his own country after 9-11-01 and a man that bombed the capital and NYPD headquarters. If you care about the future of America stop listening to main stream media. They are ignoring Obama’s background and they are doing everything they can to elect him. I will take a war hero with a life of experiance and service over a guy from Chicago that has done nothing except read speaches. I will take a woman as Vice President with Palin’s experience and resume over a has been Senator who has lost touch with the real America after too many years inside the beltway in D.C. Obama wants to forfeit a war we are winning and put our troops on welfare. Our enemies can’t wait. McCain knows that we are only free because of our military might. Our enemies must fear our ability to destroy them. God bless America! God Bless our troops! God Bless John McCain!

Goodness! Wordell certainly is pernicious toward someone who said Palin had poise. Must’ve struck a nerve. The “big picture” is that the Republicans have not offered any new solutions to the 45 million Americans who do not have health insurance, the ever increasing unemployment rate, the environment, the deficit, education, etc. All I heard at the RNC was scare tactics and personal atacks. Just like your post. Your belief that “innuendo/falsehoods/vagueness” are big words indicates the smallness of your intellect. By the way “pernicious” in this context means “vicious, malicious.”

William, These are the facts my friend. Do a few google searches and you’ll find the facts. BTW Barry, she DIDN’T sell an airplane on EBay, she only listed it there. I really don’t want Obama spending all my money for me, I really don’t like what Clinton did while he was in the White house, and Bush isn’t any better. I can only hope McCain will cut the increase in the rate of government wasteful spending. At least in the past he has made the effort to expose “pork” spending. Palin is scary if you really look at her views. She opposes abortion in all cases, wanted to censor libraries, is under an ethics investigation for abuse of power, wants (ironically) only abstinence taught in sex ed, wants creationism taught in science classes, said,”It’s God’s will that this pipeline be built”, has past ties with Alaskan Independence Party, lied about the bridge to nowhere, hired lobbyists to gain Washington earmarks, etc….This is who John McCain thinks is his best replacement should something happen to him????? McCain has totally sold out to right wing neos of the party for political advantage. Obama is a breath of fresh air. Someone who is smart and thinks before responding. He cares about the average person who’s trying to make it in this country, not just the country club set. McCain owns seven houses and Cindy’s outfit was over 300k. They talked about the Washington Elite. THEY ARE THE WASHINGTON ELITE. No, it’s time for Obama and Biden.

I love this “McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time”. In reality Obama has voted with Bush close to 80% of the time. This is because most votes in the Senate are: Should person A be recognized for something good. The I’s have it. What has he been doing all this time, making speeches and trying to get a higher office? Vote for McCain/Palin, and you know they have a record of reaching across party lines, and are proven leaders. Palin doesn’t care if you are a Republican, Democrate or Independent: if you are dirty you need to be very afraid and stay out of her line-of-sight. McCain is a gift from God to this country, and I hope we are smart enough to accept this gift. We don’t have to question his intentions, he’s already proven himself by his service to this country and when he was a POW, and shame to anyone who tries to put him in any other light. McCain showed us in his pick for VP that he has good taste. Palin will help McCain clean up Washington, and will also work across party lines to make sure we actually see some great results. He would NEVER have been captured if Daddy wouldn’t have pulled strings to get him off of desk duty and back in the air. His lack of studying and good judgement got him shot down. Look it up. Sarah Palin was a great strategic move so far on McCain’s part but it’s too bad half of her speech contained lies and the other half was a generic message that most of America can agree with. McCain has supported Bush 90% of the time, that’s a record, not something you can make up when you’re in the protection of a convention. To Palin’s credit, though, she has convinced a lot of people that her party is the only party that fix the damage done by her party.

Matt. You might want to pick the talking points you choose to regurgitate more carefully or at least spell “judgment” correctly. Bush doesn’t listen to anyone. I though he was Cheney’s puppet. McCain was tortured as a POW (or hadn’t you heard). Perhaps McC’s parents should have pulled a little harder. If you on the left want the election to be on issues, why does every other sentence begin with Bush-McCain. McCain has been a thorn in Bush’s side for 8 years. That dog won’t hunt, so keep it up. Tom — Unemployment and welfare affects all American citizens, regardless of age, sex, race, religion, and political following. It’s not a “rightie” or “leftie” issue.
