Here’s a tip: Don’t be stupid
When you are 14, the world is a strange and amazing place just out of your reach.
You don’t have a drivers license. Thus, you have no freedom. Riding your bike to the local convenience store is so lame. Life is so unfair. Parents are so totally clueless.
Yes, young man, your life is miserable. Trust me, it will get worse. Some day, you may have a 14-year-old son of your own. And you can tell him this story, your story.
It was after 1 a.m. on a Saturday morning. Recall, gentle reader, nothing good happens after 1 a.m. An Englewood officer sees a pickup driving without its headlights. He sees it make a wide turn and pulls the truck over. The driver parks with the passenger-side tires on the curb.
The officer has to know something is up.
The driver and his two passengers are all young men. The driver claims he left his license at home and doesn’t know where the insurance card is because the truck belongs to another friend. So the officer checks the driver’s name through his computer. No wants, no warrants, no record of a drivers license.
When asked, the driver fesses up that he and his buddies are 14 and borrowed the truck from an older brother to drive to a convenience store. When the officer points out the store is on the other side of town, the kids say they wanted to take the long way home. (Nothing like drawing attention to yourselves)
The kids are put in the back of the cruiser and parents called. Turns out, the 14-year-olds had slipped out of a sleepover and taken the keys without permission.
The officer cited the driver for no license and no headlights. No word on what punishment the parents meted out.
More than likely, the lives of three 14-year-olds got a bit more miserable.
As a survivor of the teen-age years and the many stupid things I have done since then, here’s a tip: If you’re going to do something stupid, the first rule is don’t get caught.
And as a corollary: Never assume that your parents are clueless. They likely screwed up and did something stupid when they were your age.

Yup…don’t be stupid and don’t get caught. I do try to recall what it was like back when I knew all the answers and my second son is repeating the very same “genius moment” that I had… Guess my Dad went through it too…By Andrew
