Sometimes the gall simply amazes you
Englewood police were called to a local big box on a possible theft. Not unusual during the holiday season.
According to the store manager, a woman attempted to return a high-end kitchen mixer using a fake receipt. Someone had taken a legitimate receipt for another item and typed over it the mixer she was returning and its $350 price. The clerk caught the faked receipt and the woman left.
Police found the woman at the store’s gas station and trespassed her from the property. There was not enough evidence at that point to file any charges.
Twenty minutes later, the manager again called police. She showed them security video from four hours earlier. There was the same woman, taking a high-end mixer off the shelf, putting it in her cart, going to the customer service desk and “returning” the mixer for $353.09 in cash.
It appeared she tried the same scam twice, succeeding once. It looked as if she got away with it.
But not so fast. Call it gall, stupidity or chutzpah.
Less than half-an-hour after police saw the video, they were called to assist a citizen. When they pulled up, there was the woman. She told police her ride back to Cincinnati had abandoned her. Police graciously seated her in the back of their cruiser. But first, they read her her rights and handcuffed her. She admitted to the scam and was arrested her for theft.
She got her ride, I guess.
