She wasn’t drunk
Englewood police got the call of a woman allegedly trying to steal a backpack at a local watering hole. When they showed up just after 1 on a Friday morning, the woman had left. But witnesses gave a description of her car.
An officer spotted the vehicle heading north out of town. He turned on his lights. Nothing. He turned on his siren. Still nothing. Finally he ran his siren through different melodies. One-half a mile later, the vehicle pulled over.
When asked why she hadn’t immediately pulled over, the woman driver said she thought the police cruiser was an ambulance. According to the police report, the officer saw a pill bottle on the passenger seat. The woman said she had prescriptions for several anti-depressant medications and said she knew she was not to mix them.
She denied having more than one beer, but stumbled when she got out of her car and was unable to pass a field sobriety test. She was cited for operating a vehicle under the influence. The woman became upset, claiming she wasn’t drunk. The officer replied that she appeared to be under the influence of her medications.
While sitting in the rear of the police cruiser, the woman began to scream and thrash around beating the doors and backseat partition with her body.
Once at the police station, the woman passed an alcohol test and agreed to give a sample to test for drugs, according to the police report. She continued thrashing and began talking trash, informing officers “she was going to have her boyfriend beat us up,” according to the report.
She told the officers she “goes to four different doctors to get her pills.” When asked to identify the pills in the pill bottle, she could not. Her sample was sent to a laboratory for testing.
Then the gentle woman twice kicked an officer in the knee —Â she said he was being mean to her — and told all present she was going to tell everyone that officers had hit her. On the way to the county lockup, she continued screaming. She was booked into the jail, but only after corrections officers placed her in isolation.
In addition to the driving under the influence, she was cited for felony assaulting a police officer and drug abuse. She remains in the county lockup as of Tuesday, July 14, on the assault charge.
