An almost who-done-it

It had all the makings of an intriguing mystery.

Englewood police were called to a local hotel when a sharp-eyed employee discovered 25 .32-caliber shell casings in a wastebasket. A search of the hotel register found the room had not been used in almost two weeks.

(Aha, the game’s afoot, Watson.)

But checking the card-reader history for the room, the motel manager found that another employee had issue a key-card for the room two days prior.

The manager told police she would speak with the employee when the employee reported back to work the next day.

The manager called police the next day after doing some more checking. She found that the a gentleman had checked into another room but found the air-conditioner did not work. So a hotel employee gave him another room, the room where the shell casings were found.

The manager then contacted the guest. He explained that he is a track and field official and had worked as a starter, firing blanks from a .32-caliber pistol to start races.

He told the manager he collected the shell casings from the event and tossed them into the wastebasket when he checked in to his new room.

Darn. It had all the earmarks of a great mystery.
