Cera holding out on ‘Arrested Developement’ movie?

Julie Zied at Fancast.com got Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz to talk about the production of the film based off the critically acclaimed TV series.

Hurwitz says he doesn’t want to start a script until he has the cast locked down. He is having trouble getting one or more cast members from the series to get on board for the film. Rumor had it, Will Arnett and Michael Cera were the holdouts. But Hurwitz says “Arnett is gung-ho.” Hollywood Insider at EW.com backs up Arnett’s excitement for the film.

So what about Michael Cera? The National Post interviewed Cera (who played the awkward teenager George Michael Bluth on Arrested Development) in late August about his newest film Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist and asked him briefly about a film adaptation of the Arrested Development.

“I don’t think I would want to see a movie of the series if I was a fan, anyway,” Cera says. “And I don’t really see a need for it if you can get the three seasons on DVD.”

But that was back in August, before the Hurwitz started talking about actually making a film adaptation of the TV show. How does he feel now? The Internet didn’t provide me any newer answers.

He seems completely disinterested in working on the movie which, might I add, is probably the reason he is famous now. Why turn your back on your roots?

Ways to make the film without Cera:

  • Set the movie several years in the future from the end of the series and have Cera’s character away at college, out of the film
  • Set the movie MANY years in the future and recast Cera’s character for an older actor
  • Set the movie in the past before his character was born
  • Use old footage of him from the series to digitally insert him into the movie (favorite idea)
  • Kill off his character (maybe have him eaten by a seal)

Do you think Michael Cera will give in and rejoin the Arrested Development cast? What will happen if he doesn’t return? Will they make the movie without him or will the movie cease to exist? Do you have other ideas of how to do the movie without him?

I would like to see them deal with his (possible) absence in a fashion similar to that of the show. They could mention that George Michael is away at college and then have Ron Howard break the fourth wall with a voice-over: “At least, that’s what the studio wanted us to say.”
